NIGERIA Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, in Bayelsa State, said yesterday that the ‘no work, no pay’ policy of the state government cannot not stand, as it is ‘no pay no work’. Chairmen of the trade unions, Comrades John Bipre Ndiomu, (NLC) and Tari Dounana (TUC), said labour is not against the policy, but government should meet its own obligations by paying salaries as at when due. Leadership of the organised labour said their initial statement stands “when salaries are paid, workers will go to work, but when we are not paid as at when due, we will not go to work. Our stand is pay us our salaries and we will go to work, we are prepared to perform our duties effectively. I don’t know why different reports making the rounds are one sided.

In that meeting, government promised certain things. ‘‘Governor Seriake Dickson said salaries will be paid before the 30th of every month. Of course he has already paid January salary and our outstanding salaries will follow subsequently, so we were surprised to hear this one sided report from the government. “Labour is shocked to see government’s preparedness to hastily implement such a policy when workers are being owed several months of unpaid salaries. “We urge all workers to be duty minded, but government must ensure prompt payment of salaries as at when due, so as to avert unnecessary ambiguities between it and labour.

We are also reminding government to pay the six months backlog of arrears owed to workers. “We urge all workers in the state to remain calm and law-abiding by reporting promptly to their various places of work as labour is doing everything possible to protect their interest and welfare.”
