Pilgrims stone Kanti Bello in Mecca

 
Angry Nigerian pilgrims who opposed the return of the luggage weighing policy yesterday attacked the leader of the Federal Government delegation to this year’s hajj in Saudi Arabia, Senator Mahmud Kanti Bello, for insisting that pilgrims’ luggage must be weighed before being transported to Nigeria.

The incident took place around 12:20pm Saudi time (10:20am Nigerian time) at Suda Hijal area on Mansur Street in Mecca. The vehicle in which Bello was travelling and the two others conveying other officials on the delegation had all their windscreens smashed when the irate pilgrims began to hurl stones at them.

Bello, who was in company of two ministers, chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) Alhaji Muhammad Bello and other officials, was at Suda Hijal to flag off the luggage weighing after the hajj. Suda Hijal is one of three luggage weighing centers designated only for Nigerian pilgrims.

No sooner had he started addressing pilgrims who turned in for the exercise on the need to stick to the 40kg per pilgrim’s travelling bag and 10kg hand bag than the pilgrims began to openly object the exercise and stone him along with other members of the delegation. The angry pilgrims, according to Daily Trust findings, were those from Bello’s home state Katsina, Adamawa, Kebbi and Zamfara States. Bello was unhurt. The timely intervention of the persons in charge of the weighing center and some loaders saved the situation.

The pilgrims’ main grudges, according to a witness who is also a loader at the luggage weighing center, was Bello’s insistence that their luggage must be weighed,

Did these pilgrims travel to Mecca to pray or learn how to haul stones?

Just confirms the hypocrisy in religion in Nigeria. people pretend to have a form of holiness just for effects & not really as per a way of life.

That is embarrassing of the pilgrims. Why can't they channel their disenchantment civilly rather than having to hurl stones at their officials.

Here you have thousands of hot Muslims gathered around three stone pillars, desperately trying to get there twenty-one stones inside of the pits. If you really took the time to analyze this you would see that this ritual had to have been man-made, unless you think that “Allah” would set you up to get hurt. Think about it, thousands of pilgrims are all gathered around these pits, throwing rocks. That means thousands of rocks are being thrown towards the front and all of the people in the front are getting knocked in the head.

The Federal government needs to stop spending money on sending people on pilgrimage, whether it is hajj to mecca or pilgrimage to jerusalem, it needs to stop. It is state money. This is getting ridiculous.

Brilliant story - may be they should start hurling rocks at their corrupt leadership. Who ever thought that excess luggage would be the catalyst for the revolution.

I hope you are joking. Some disgruntled elements were protesting at not being allowed to bend the rules to their favour and that is a revolution? That is like saying the man who insulted a traffic warden for being given a parking fine, or the police man protesting over not being bribed, is a revolutionary. Federal government sponsored pilgrimage simply needs to stop, let people throw rocks at private airline staff if they want, as long as they are not using state money to go on these trips.

what is all these arguements all about? is stoning not part of the programme in mecca? what is wrong with people practicing what they are thought? if the senator does not know the difference between religion and politics, what is wrong in others reminding him?
what i hate about this story is the smashing of the windscreen because it is only in movies that windscreens are smashed while the occupants of the cars go unhurt.
these pilgrims must learn how to hurt the occupants when next they attack senators in mecca.

By the way, I don't envy Nigerian pilgrims because most went on biz trip not pilgrimage. If you take a sample, you will discover that at least 90% of the pilgrims were sponsored by biz mongol for goods shipment. I was told of a man who performs Hajj every year on sponsorship, just to buy goods for the sponsor. So, it is not surprising they are vehemently resisting the rule. It is so sad that we are in a society where people are more religious than godly, May God/Allah have mercy on our deceitful souls.

Stoning is not part of Islam unless you meant sharia law.
