Thinking Of Driving My Car From Lagos To Abuja. Need Some Advice by baro24: 2:04pm On Feb 06, 2017
Hey, I want to go to Abuja for business and will be moving around a lot in ABJ so I'm planning on driving my car for the trip so I can use my car when I get to Abuja.

This is my first time doing this so I wanted to know if anyone here has done this before. If yes, please do you have any tips for me?
- what's the best route to take?
- How much fuel should I buy (I drive a Toyota corolla)
- is it worth taking my car or should I use bus and see how I can manage myself when I get to Abj.

Really need advise on this so I will be grateful if anyone can help out. smiley

Driving is stress but you move at your pace. Google maps is what I use. You will be stopped by police like every 5 min at a stage of the journey. Frsc too might stop you as well as customs. Your car will hear it with the bad roads. To fuel your car like a full tank should do if you don't get lost or no serious traffic jam

If you take a sienna public transport or priority transport you just pay and sit down like a Boss with air-conditioner and sleep, play game browse, chat etc on your phone less than the cost of fueling your car to Abuja from Lagos.

I drove from Abj to Lagos 2014. I did it cause I was moving with my dogs kind of relocating.

Would I do it again? I'd think twice. Paid someone to take the car back to Abuja for a good deal.

I won't try it.

The stress is not worth it (settle police,FRSC, state touts every 2km) ,bad Road etc. Too risky unless you will travel with police escort.

Jeje fly or join luxury bus. Taxi's in Abuja are not that expensive either. 200 for drop within the city centers

if you haven't come to Abuja with your car b4, I will not advice you to do it. First, the stress of driving on the road and all the police challenges, bad road, moreover you are not familiar with the route, just come to Abuja with public transport and use Taxi to do all your run around. Taxi in Abuja is not very expensive. If you have much to do just hire a taxi for the whole time you need. If you need help you can get in touch with me , I stay in Abuja and I am a transporter. I can help you to get a taxi that will work with till you go back.

This is from someone who has done that journey before with his own ride.

First, the gridlock on Lagos-Ibadan road is something you need to pray you do not encounter. Try and leave Lagos early. Next, you will be stopped by police virtually every 5km. If your papers are not correct or you are driving a tinted car without a permit, you will have boatloads of problems. You will also encounter the customs guys at three points: Okpella junction and 2 others.

Roads: bad roads await you in the Kogi angle of the journey. Make sure your car can withstand the stress. Luckily, the rains have stopped so you may find the roads between Kabba-Obajana or between Okene and Lokoja more tolerable than they were some months back.

Fuel: you will have to leave Lagos on a full tank. Top up in Akure, possibly another top-up at Lokoja so you can enter Abj with at least half-tank.

Verdict: not worth the hassle, considering you will do a return leg, which means all the hassles X2. Save yourself the stress and either go by air or by public trans. You can move around ABJ comfortably without your car.

@OP Its an adventure. You can give it a shot. If you do not try and make mistakes, how will you be better?
If you have the physical strength, you will be fine.
If your papers are OK and your vehicle is OK. You are good to go.
With Toyota corolla, you will refil your tank once.
If you are the rugged type, you can get 2 or 3 co-travellers that will subsidize your fuel cost
Google will be a good friend in Abuja.
From experience, I drove to and fro for the first time all alone
Have a safe trip.
DONT BE SCARED TO TRY

No, I won't advice my enemy to play that road now! Attacks by criminals keep getting worse at all time of the day.
