In the midst of the ongoing controversies on President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s health, the national body of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has expressed displeasure that the nation’s first citizen could not receive medicare at home.
In a statement, Secretary-General of the association, Dr Kenneth Okoro, said: “The Nigerian Medical Association is embarrassed by a situation where the nation’s leaders do not have confidence in our health care delivery system.

While joining other well meaning Nigerians to pray for the quick recovery of President Yar’Adua, we are particularly saddened that in a nation blessed with world-class health professionals, treatments for ailments like pericarditis has to be sought outside Nigeria, yet, Defence takes such a huge chunk of our national budget while health is several steps below the ladder.
“Efforts to motivate health workers should include massive infrastructural development in the health sector,” he said.

Also reacting is Dr Osahon Enabulele, Chairman, Edo state branch of the Nigerian Medical Association. According to the former Gubernatorial aspirant, Edo state,
“President Yar’Adua’s ill health is a very serious issue for him, his family and Nigeria. I fervently pray for his recovery. However, I must say that his ill-health and the way it is being handled so far has done incalculable damage to the nation: its psyche, its health sector and its economy.

“His frequent medical trips abroad gives the impression that the nation’s top leadership lacks commitment to the nation’s health sector and the actualization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
“I would have expected Yar’Adua to use the circumstances of his ill health to empower and build confidence in the nation’s health care system. After all, his past and present ill-health is a condition that can be managed by medical experts in Nigeria. Even if it can’t be managed in Nigeria, what I expected Yar’Adua to have done (like King Fahd of Saudi Arabia did some years ago) is to import the so-called foreign experts and technology into Nigeria such that Nigeria gains.

“In the final analysis, I think the earlier the nation gets over this off and on state of the President’s health, the better for its citizens and its wealth. When the nation’s leadership is ill, then the country is ill. Obviously, an unhealthy nation cannot drive a productive economy. Such a nation will remain poor. May Almighty God heal Mr President and our struggling and troubled nation,” he said.

Corroborating the association’s mood, Dr Adedamola Dada, Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Lagos state, said,
“The Nigerian Medical Association cannot advise Yar’Adua since the association has no details of the nature of his ailment.
“However, there is need for the President to improve the health system in the country so that nobody would have to travel abroad to seek medical attention. What would happen to the poor people who cannot do so? It is therefore a sacred duty binding on them to improve the health sector.”

Maybe the doctors haven't been well briefed by the PDP henchmen in Abuja, that Yar Adua is not actually ill. He is quite hail and hearty, representing Nigeria in the on going squash/polo competition in Saudi Arabia, He playing for the semi final this weekend and definitely will return with basket full of gold medal, next year. Jonathan and the federal executive council met over the week to discuss the arrangement for his home coming civic reception.

All ticket for the reception had all been grabbed, even Soludo paid millions to obtain the scarce ticket yesterday in Onitsha as Ogbulafor and other delivered it to him safely, because kidnappers may hijack it.

Why would the NMA think the Mr President would want to receive medical treatment at home ?

Do they want him to be on a dialysis session ; with the risk on NEPA striking? Or fuel scarcity to prevent the Generator from running ? Or the MD to proceed on strike due to unpaid allowances?

Agagu said so many years ago that he "could not do check up on his heart in any Nigerian hospital".

The hospitals & Health centers are meant for us Nigerians, whose lives are of no significance. After all we are over 150 million in this category .

NMA should be worried about Nigeria being called country. If an organization such as NMA with seasoned educated bunch has not fathomed out that Nigeria only exist on piece of a book called atlas, then it has no reason to complain. The geographical expression in Nigeria is a cesspit and undeniable jungle. The action of flying the president to another developing country is a damnable endeavor on the part of Nigeria. The colonial contraption called Nigeria needs to be destroyed for the sake of humanity.
