I'm a bit worried. My reservation with Travel start was canceled as I do not have a transit visa to Dublin or a schengen visa for Frankfurt. Now I have booked from Lagos to Montreal and there is going to be a 45 minutes stopover at Dublin. Will I be needing a transit visa since we will just be there for 45 minutes. |

kissoflife:Welcome to Canada. You would need to get used to having patience when accessing government related services. Delays are usually due to bureaucracy. Try to call the CIC line. You might be lucky to get through to an agent. 1-888-242-2100 (in Canada only) Client Support Centre agents - Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 4 Likes 6 Shares |

Elders - Would you recommend going to school straight after landing? My friend and I land in a few weeks. She got admitted to a 1 year MSc program in Queens University, Ontario (fully funded by the school). I've been telling her that it would be better if she comes to Toronto with me to job hunt; however, she feels the program in Queens will help her get a better job next year. Or maybe she doesn't want to be around me anymore. Seriously. Abeg, waitin una feel? 1 Like |

maternal: Serious? Why so? I just feel going to school to spend a year is a waste of time. She could get a job in 2-3 months Toronto if she starts searching from day 1. |

It is not a waste of time at all. Abeg, just free her, don't spoil her mind, afterall it's only one year and it's not like she is paying. mostojr: 2 Likes |

mostojr: And what job will she get ? Working at Walmart or flipping burgers ? You think she'll land today and become a CEO tomorrow ? She may get an amazing job once she lands, who knows. Nobody is God. But her chances are slim. Research shows it takes close to 4 years for a new young immigrant to start making their way once they land here. She will drastically speed up the process by having a Canadian masters. And if her program has an internship attached to it, along with networking with her professors who usually know key people within the industry they're lecturing, she'll become very success, very quickly. Meanwhile every interview you go too all you'll hear is "do you have any Canadian experience ?" And if it comes down to you and another candidate who has a Canadian degree, who do you think they'll pick ? No sane person would choose a Nigerian degree over a Canadian one here. Life here in Canada is a marathon not a sprint. Focus on building a solid foundation before trying to sprint to the finish line. That's what she's doing and it makes sense. She'll be able to negate any criticism by a hiring manager. You're discouraging her to forfeit 1 year of school to go flip burgers or work in a survival call center job ? 1 YEAR ? What's 1 year in a grand scheme of things ? And she's not even paying for it ? This woman is a genius. Abeg leave her alone. If you're confident in your method then go do you. 45 Likes 2 Shares |

Is there any age limit for migrating to Canada? Also what chances has an ICT person got finding his footing in Canada? |

Yes, it was delivered at my place last week Friday. Maybe it's in transit, depending on how far your place is. This Friday should be a good time for yours to be delivered too. kissoflife: 1 Like 1 Share |

mostojr:Apart from some few cases where people get jobs before or just after arriving, especially those in IT related careers, it could be tough to get a breakthrough. Imo, she has made a wise decision if we are to go by statistics of landing very good jobs based on what I have witnessed here. Outside of regulated professions, I still have some guys that we landed together doing not so good jobs in Calgary. They have bought houses and are stuck in paying mortgages and bills on survival jobs hence can't take out time to upgrade. While those that returned to school (usually around 2 years sacrifice) always or almost get good jobs not long after grad. Some even months before grad. While there is no guarantee that returning to school means you would get an awesome job, but the job market sure favours those with Canadian education. This would also depends on the particular course she goes back to school for. If she goes back to school for a Masters program in Journalism or History for example, I dont really see how such course would help her much in the job market. I could still be wrong though. my 2 cents. 22 Likes 3 Shares |

bassette:No. Age doesn't affect your chances of success in Canada; however, the express entry point system now favours younger migrants, unlike past years when the point system favoured older migrants with years of experience. ICT is good in Canada as long as you know your stuffs. 6 Likes 1 Share |

iamforcanada:Non academic careers would depend on your field of Phd. Someone with a Phd in Physiotherapy or Engineering or Accounting would almost default back to their first degree profession. With a phd, you might get contract or temp jobs for a while to fill spots of instructors going on hols. Eventually, there would be a retirement or vacancy to fill. Some Nigerians even go for a 2nd Phd. There are also few research position openings omce in a while all across Canada. Keep your options open. 1 Like 1 Share |
