This conference follows from the (i) 1st Science and Technology Conference “Bridging the Digital and Scientific Divides: Forging Partnerships with the Nigerian Diaspora” July 25 – 27, 2005 and the (ii) 1st Nigerian Diaspora Day and the 2nd Science and Technology Conference “Strenghtening Partnerships with The Nigerian Diaspora” July 25 – 28, 2006. Both events, held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, took place in furthering the Federal Government’s policy of involving the Nigerian Diaspora in national developmental efforts. The special guest of honour was Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of The Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In pursuance of the positive outcome of the July 2005 and July 2006 conferences in Abuja, this 1st Nigeria Worldwide Diaspora Conference focuses (a) Mobilizing and sensitizing Nigerians in the Diaspora and their involvement in moving Nigeria forward, (b) Promoting and strengthening NIDO locally and worldwide through partnerships with other Nigerian organizations, and (c) Promoting the investment opportunities in Nigeria for the Diaspora. This 1st Nigeria Worldwide Diaspora Conference has adopted the theme: "Awakening the Tiger in the Heart of Africa” The Role of the Diaspora in the Socio-economic Development of Nigeria The projected sub-themes are as follows: Investment opportunities for the Nigerian Diaspora; Marketing the Nigeria brand: the Heart of Africa Project; Socio-economic development and reforms: empowerment of youth, women and the under-privilege (discussions on reforms would focus more on the successes and challenges); The role of Nigerian Diaspora in the advancement of science and technology in Nigeria; and Diversifying Nigerian economy-untapped potential: real estate and tourism. The above theme and sub-themes are appropriate at this time of transition in Nigeria. The conference is expected to, among other things, bring together Nigerian professionals to discuss effective ways to contribute in nation building as well as to network amongst themselves. The meeting would highlight and recognize the accomplishments of some Nigerians, in addition to projecting a more positive image of Nigeria and Nigerians around the world. NIDO Mission Statement NIDO’s Mission is to galvanize and mobilize the vast human resources of Nigerians in Diaspora to assist in the socio-economic development of Nigeria and to instill consciousness and civic responsibility that will enhance the advancement of Nigerians and humanity in general. CITY OF TORONTO (www.toronto.ca) Toronto, a city of 5.5 million people, on the north shore of Lake Ontario, is the largest of Canada's vibrant urban centres. It is the hub of the nation's commercial, financial, industrial, and cultural life, and is the capital of the Province of Ontario. People have lived here since shortly after the last ice age, although the urban community only dates to 1793 when British colonial officials founded the 'Town of York' on what then was the Upper Canadian frontier. That backwoods village grew to become the 'City of Toronto' in 1834, and through its subsequent evolution and expansion Toronto has emerged as one of the most liveable and multicultural urban places in the world today. Toronto is a clean, safe, cosmopolitan city with a wonderful network of parks, recreational, and cultural facilities. Toronto is the home of four professional sports teams and the third largest English-speaking theatre district in the world, behind New York and London. One of the world's most ethnically diverse cities, it is home to more than 80 ethnic communities from Africa, Asia, and Europe.
