Benfica have confirmed to the Lisbon stock exchange that Chelsea have begun negotiations to sign £17 million rated midfielder Ramires.

In a brief statement to the Comissao do Mercado de Valores Mobiliarios, the Portuguese regulatory authorities, Benfica said that they had "entered negotiations with Chelsea FC for the transfer of the economic and sporting rights for the athlete Ramires Santos Nascimento."


Ramires, 23, has been linked with a switch to the Blues all summer and had been rumoured to have already undergone a medical. In a short statement to Euronext Lisbon, the Portuguese champions stated the two sides are working on a deal, but provided no extra details.

The ex-Cruzeiro man made a huge impression at Benfica last term and was pivotal to their success. After impressing for Brazil at World Cup 2010, he is expected to help replace Michael Ballack, Joe Cole and Deco at Stamford Bridge.

The midfielder's move is all but sealed.

Benfica have confirmed that they have agreed with Chelsea a fee of €22m for highly-rated midfielder Ramires. Once terms are agreed with the Brazilian player, and medical tests completed, the transfer will be completely confirmed.

In a brief statement to the Comissao do Mercado de Valores Mobiliarios (CMVM), the Portuguese regulatory authorities, Benfica said:

"Benfica, hereby announces that it has reached a preliminary agreement with Chelsea for the definitive transfer of the sporting and economic rights of the professional footballer Ramires for the amount of €22,000,000."

It was also made clear that this fee was agreed subject to medical checks at both clubs.

In what has been a rather swift-moving transfer saga, the Portuguese outfit made this announcement mere hours after telling the CMVM that negotiations were underway.

Ramires has been linked with Chelsea for some time, but since a will on the part of both clubs emerged, negotiations have proceeded rapidly. As such the move is expected to be completely concluded by the end of the week.

Ambitious Brazilian club Fluminense have signed former Portugal international Deco on a two-year contract. The 32-year-old, who arrived at the side via a free transfer, will reportedly earn $9 million a year at his new club.

Deco had been informed by Chelsea earlier in the summer that he was free to look for a new club as he did not feature in manager Carlo Ancelotti's plans for the 2010-11 campaign. The Brazilian-born Portuguese international himself had admitted that he wanted to play for Fluminense and end his playing career in his native country Brazil, and is now set to fulfil his ambition.

The 32-year-old joined Chelsea from Barcelona in 2008 but failed in his plight to light up the Premier League. He started his footballing career with Brazilian giants Corinthians and moved to current Portuguese champions Benfica in 1997.

After winning the Champions League with FC Porto in 2004, Deco moved to Spanish giants Barcelona with whom he won two Primera Division titles and the European Cup in 2006.
