The office of the Accountant General of the Federal (AGF) has issued warning to auditors in the country to desist from practices capable of aiding free flow of corruption in government agencies and parastatals. Adding that anyone found culpable, serving or retired will be brought to book.
The AGF, Ahmed Idris disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday.

“I will want to sound some warning to all of you and indeed to all
auditors of the treasury and elsewhere. Any auditor serving in the
system should know that they can be personally held responsible while
in service or even after service.” He said.

He added that auditing should be done prior to payment of funds and
not after, stating that if auditors do their job diligently as it
should be, loopholes for systemic corruption can be tackled right from
point of payments.

In a related development, the President of the Association of Forensic
& Investigative Auditors, Victoria Enape stated that the level of
corruption in Nigeria’s public sector has moved to a stage where
looters are now engaging sophisticated digital technologies in
perpetuating their trade.

She added that Nigeria must move at per with other developed nations
of the world by adopting forensic auditing system if the current fight
against corruption must see the light of the day.

In her words, “fraudsters today have gone sophisticated. If you watch,
they use computer to commit fraud this days and if we rely on the
traditional auditing and investigation, you will discover that we will
not be able to tackle it.

“We need sophisticated mechanisms as well to tackle fraud.

“Any country that have not bought into forensic and investigative
audit is lacking behind. How do you think you can use analogue to
tackle digital? You need digital to tackle digital.”
