10 Reasons Why Federal Universities Are No Match To Covenant University (PROOFS) by TheVictorious(m): 4:54am On Feb 23, 2017
In recent times we’ve seen a lot of reasons why federal universities are better than private universities; even though most publications as such are not always factual but mostly based on sentiment and appeal to the bigger population (argumentum ad populum), which federal universities have over their private counterparts. To address this, I decided to quote facts where relevant to show us how that our highly celebrated federal universities are living on past glory as compared to their match (15 year old CU). This should tell you what to expect from the burgeoning AfeBabalola varsity, Landmark and the likes in few years’ time!
For the purpose of this thread, I mostly compared only University of Ibadan (UI) and Obafemi Awolowo University OAU to Covenant University (CU), as they are the most prestigious and best performing federal universities in Nigeria. For points that comparisons are not made with UI and OAU, no evidence to base such on, please provide if they exist.

Note: If you think I’m wrong in any of the points, kindly provide proof to counter my argument. Criticism of this piece should be based on factual arguments not insults.

1. RESEARCH

In recent times, Covenant University has continued to lead the pack of Nigerian universities in research. This made it leapfrog a number of reputed federal universities in the rankings since 2014, to claim a much debated 2nd place in the then Webometrics ranking. Since then CU has continued to be relevant in research and has in effect severally displaced OAU from its previous positions.

Researchers: Of all the Universities in Nigeria, CU has the highest number of active researchers on google scholar (with well over 400 researchers), significantly surpassing those of UI (141) and OAU (93). Stunning right? Follow links to verify.
Links:
a. CU
https://scholar.google.com/citations?view_op=view_org&hl=en&org=18224868971208705017&after_author=AgNhAP3___8J&astart=400
b. UI

c. OAU
https://scholar.google.com/citations?view_op=view_org&hl=en&org=9219141668983597010&after_author=qKpcAPz___8J&astart=90

Research output: Being one of the top 10 consistent universities with the largest research output on the continent, Covenant University has maintained the largest institutional repository of all universities in West Africa since the past 3 years. After a slight slip in January 2017, CU’s intuitional repository continues to maintain top spot among West-African varsities; presently ranking 13th in Africa and 642nd in the world (a position that neither UI nor OAU have ever attained). Picture is attached.

Follow link to verify: http://repositories.webometrics.info/en/Africa

Research relevance: Not only does CU have a high volume of research output but also high visibility and citation of their research. No wonder CU research papers are one of the most read in the country. On Researchgate and Scopus for examples, some of the highest ranking scholars are CU researchers – due to high use of their works around the world (do conduct search on scopus and Researchgate to verify).
In fact, almost every week you check Researchgate, statistics of the previous week will most likely show that CU had the highest read journal in Nigeria; always exceeding UI and OAU’s highest read papers by startling margins. Those that are active on research gate must have noticed this trend, and if you doubt, you can begin to check for yourself now.

Okay, right now, a check on the profiles of OAU, UI and CU on Researchgate will reveal that the highest read publication of these universities across the world last week had 222 (OAU), 568 (UI) and 10,000 (CU) reads respectively (see pics and follow links). Two weeks ago, CU’s highest read publication had over 9000 reads across the globe while those of OAU and UI combined were much less than 1000! There’s little or no chance any of these schools’ research papers will be more sought after than that of CU even this week and any other week!

The relevance of CU’s researches is what has led to production of a number of patented products over the years (see more on inventions and innovations).

2. INVENTIONS AND PATENTS

over the years, CU has been known for ground breaking research works, some of which has led to inventions and production of patented products. A few are listed:

A. Prof. Louis Egwari's (browse more about him) patents... New culture medium et al, follow the link: http://covenantuniversity.edu.ng/News/Covenant-University-Receives-Patent-for-Three-Inventions#.WKB9OG8rK00

LET ME STOP HERE!

Have you heard of Covenant University Centre for Research, Innovation and Discovery (CUCRID), the recently completed a state of the art research hub that has several instrumentation laboratories and workshops. Not many schools will be able to run such over here, given the epileptic nature of power supply.

Do you know that National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) has opened her office in CU for easy patenting of the products of their research clusters?

Do you know that CU currently runs research on telemedicine and its application in cancer remedy; for which C.K. Ayo (former CU VC) was invited to speak in Harvard last year: https://www.nairaland.com/2243880/c.k-ayo-presents-harvard-university.

3. ACADEMIC STANDARD

CU has got very high academic standard as compared to their “federal” counterparts in Nigeria. The following prove this;

Pass Rate: The pass rate at Covenant University is very high. This is what majority of world class universities are known for; making average minds excellent. The pass rates in Ivy League institutions like Harvard, Yale and Cornell are remarkably high, hence their abnormally high matriculation-convocation turnout rate of 80 to 98%!
Back home, Covenant University has been sternly criticized over the years for the high pass rate it records every year. Consistently producing an average of 10% first class (higher than those of OAU and UI combined), about 48% 2:1, 34% 2:2 and 08% 3rd class, since the past 3 years. No pass grade! Did you notice something; it’s easier to get 1st class in CU than to make 3rd class.
Now compare to OAU which as at its last convocation in December 2016, produced 66 first class out of 4646 graduands (representing 1.4% first class) and UI which around November 2016, produced 117 first class graduates out of 5598 (representing 2%) – "One of the highest they’ve produced in recent times". These are the same schools that are known to admit only excellent students. Did the system make them more excellent or less excellent? Food for thought.
Links:
a. CU: http://pulse.ng/student/covenant-university-157-students-graduate-with-a-first-class-id5198470.html
b. OAU: http://www.thepointng.com/oau-produces-66-first-class-out-of-6827-graduating-students/
c. UI: http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2016/11/15/117-bags-first-class-at-university-of-ibadan/
The significance of this is that an average CU fresh man will emerge excellent before final year or would have otherwise dropped out on result basis before attaining final year, if not improving to match the standard!

Validity of CU first class: CU graduates have always proven that they merit their grade. This particularly was seen among the first class graduates that represented the institution in "all" the editions of Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme for Innovation and Development (PRESSID). For the records, in all the editions of PRESSID that were organized in 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively, CU first class graduates beat first class graduates of every other institution in Nigeria (including “almighty” UI and OAU) to claim the highest slot by a big margin.
Again this was greeted with criticism by their federal school counterparts (who always claim that a 1st class in CU is equivalent 2:1 in UI and OAU). They gave a funny excuse that the only reason why CU claimed such amount of slots was not because they were better but because the school produced many first class graduates. Now the truth is this; 1000 substandard students won’t beat 100 better qualified students to a limited slot of say 10, in any merit based contest. Making that excuse an intellectual nonsense!

http://thenationonlineng.net/covenant-universitys-first-class-graduates-dominate-scheme/

CU runs a very strong grading system making it as easy to fail as it is to pass – if one is not serious. In CU for instance (compared to federal unis) an F has far more negative impact, such that an A in a previously taken course won’t have weight. Not just that; scores that will earn you a grade of “E” in UI and OAU will earn you “F” in CU, and this has been since inception till date! Also, the class attendance system screens out those that are not eligible to take exams; “that must not have had up to 70% class attendance in a course”. A course is taken by at least 3 lecturers. Also, the use biometrics makes it “totally impossible” to circumvent these checks, or even take exam for another person.
Also, students in CU take much number of courses than their counterparts in Federal and state universities. For most hundred level students for instance, 3 unit courses are almost not existent. Making the average student offer 13 to 14 courses per semester.

Follow link: http://pulse.ng/student/the-inec-model-covenant-university-begins-use-of-card-readers-for-exam-accreditation-id3718453.html

See attached picture of a Biochemistry student’s course evaluation for 2012/13 session. They now take more courses! Their mates in federal universities don’t take such amount of courses except in a case of carry over!

In CU, if a student that does not make 3rd class after two years of admission; his/her portal automatically closes up. This is highly programmed process that is never by-passed. Hence every student in CU is at least on a 3rd class and can only get better.

• Very low and insignificant rate of student malpractice:Integrity and Spirituality are core values in CU (see more on last point). Hence, the average student believe in the reward of his/her productive engagement. Furthermore, Covenant is one institution that is very strict in her definition of exam malpractice (in varsity wide examination and class tests), and the penalty for defaulters is outright expulsion. Hence, over the years, the average rate of expulsion for exam malpractice has dwindled drastically, now ranging from 3 to 5 every semester, since the past 2 years. The school has a vision to achieve a malpractice free semester and to attain a time when students will take exams with no human invigilation. 4. PACE SETTER

Covenant University is indeed a pace setter in higher education provision in Nigeria and Africa at large.

• The first school that started fully practical entrepreneurship courses and made it mandatory for all her students. This has been adopted as a standard by NUC for university accreditation.

• The first Private university to have been ranked first in Nigeria (ahead of UI and OAU) in 2014; barely after 12 years of inception

• The first Private University to have been ranked among the 15th best in Africa and the youngest to have achieved such feat

• The university that abolished the pass grade from inception. This has been adopted as a standard by the NUC.

• First African university to Host UN Habitat annual global report on human settlement and also the first African varsity to sign pact with UN

• First university to fully adopt biometric/card readers for class attendance and exam verification

• First university to launch mobile learning in Nigeria

• Covenant University Library (CLR) was the first to Adopt the UNESCO Open Access standard

As a new university, the number of the number of lecturers and students actively engaged in research, researches carried out and volume of research output of Covenant University over the past 2 to 3 years has no match in Nigeria. Not even UI, how much more OAU (The google scholar stats stated earlier prove this – see research for more).

See the Attached pics.

Tell me one reason one should argue with you

All institutions have their strength and weaknesses... there is really no essence of comparison and argument.

How many Professors are genuinely CU Profs and not visiting Lecturers

To cap it all... you based your arguments on what you saw on Google Scholar and webometric rankings.... when their are thousands of researchers that have not submitted or updated their profiles on that platform.

http://www.webometrics.info/en/node/99

"This edition was built with data collected during the first week of October 2015 from the public profiles of researchers working in Nigerian (Africa) institutions. It is a BETA Ranking of the scientists according to their declared (voluntarily) presence in the Google Scholar Citations database. We advise to those interested in appearing in future editions to sign into these databases, correcting and updating their public profiles."

Even as at now, UI still rank better than CU

5. QUALITY OF GRADUATES

Covenant University graduates are highly sought after in the labour market:

http://www./search-cv-web/company/covenant-university.
Featured: https://techpoint.ng/2016/08/30/philip-ese-engine-room/

• Every student of the university undergoes compulsory professional certification and leadership courses unique to their program.

• Every student of the university takes at least 2 entrepreneurship courses with hands-on practical classes and projects.

• Town and gown programs: A special program every department hold “at least” once in a semester to get chief of industries and professionals come lecture and interact with the students.

• Corporate culture: Making her students ready for the corporate world CU students are mandated to dress corporately around work/business environment within the working hours of Mondays to Friday. Owing to the processes involved in most day-to-day activities in CU, students have to write and submit letters (both in printed and email formats) and do that over and over again!

• Problem based learning: CU practices problem based learning in “all” courses. Making classes interactive and learning fun. In every course, students compulsorily do research and make presentations on designated topics as part of their class assessment.

• Good student-teacher relationship (see final point on leadership and response to mails).

• Low student to teacher ratio: since CU does not admit beyond their capacity, they’ve always maintained a good student to teacher ratio compared to their federal counterparts.

6. YOUNG VIBRANT ALUMNI BODY

Of every university in Nigeria, CU has the youngest alumni body and yet vibrant. CU graduates are achievers everywhere they are found.

And much more.

Ask of the notable alumni of UI and OAU to make your comparison; you’ll hear of Professor Wole Soyinka and other notable names that have been since when Nigeria was struggling for independence. What happened to the tens of thousands of graduates that these schools have been churning out since the past 10 years?

7. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

It is no news that CU has a far better learning environment as compared to UI and OAU; and even all other federal universities in the country. As a matter of fact, only fellow private universities like Afe Babalola, AUN, Babcock are comparable to CU, environment wise. Pictures don’t lie, follow the links for a quick comparison:

OAU pics: https://www.nairaland.com/2844535/beautiful-pictures-obafemi-awolowo-university
UI Pics: https://www.nairaland.com/1559403/university-ibadan-pictures
CU pics: https://www.nairaland.com/3581935/covenant-university-pictures

• CU can boast of the best learning environment in the country. No wonder the institution hosted two editions of UN habitat global report on human settlement, being the first Nigerian university to do so.

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/10/un-global-report-on-human-settlements-launched-at-covenant-varsity/

• Serenity and Tranquility: Social Vices that are obtainable in OAU such as rioting protest or even kidnapping as the case may be. Funny enough, I could remember reading a post here where one primitive dude claimed that student protests (such as we see among government owned institutions) is part of what makes OAU the best university in Nigeria. All over the world, standard universities are so transparent that there would be no need for such uprisings (more on last point)!

http://thenewsnigeria.com.ng/2016/03/5-ui-students-injured-as-striking-workers-turn-violent/
http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/161260-breaking-presidency-convoy-shoots-protesting-oau-students-2.html

• Fully computerized: facial recognition, functional internet (with 10G monthly for students). Every single classroom in CU has a white board as well as a smart board that can access the internet. Still on the classrooms and labs, those of CU are neater and more spacious than those of OAU and UI (or any other federal uni) which are known to admit more than they can accommodate. Even if they don’t over admit, no need to compare, their classrooms cannot match that the classrooms/indoor pics that follow!

From the few pictures available it is evident that CU learning/working environment dwarf those of the premier university (UI) and Oba Awon University (OAU); No wonder CU was once listed as one of the best 100 places to work in Nigeria (ahead of many reputable companies – see link!). You now know why Covenant University has since inception continued to attract highly reputed foreign researchers and speakers such as the likes of: Misra sanjay, Dilip Kumar De, Raphael Mordi, Thomas Sergeant (Nobel Prize holder), Ogi Okwumabua, Alvin Roth (Nobel laureate), Eric Maskin (Nobel Prize Holder), etc. see links.

8. ELECTRICITY

Given the presence of a durable power generation gas plant, electricity is not a setback for CU. In fact, In case of any problem with the gas plant, major building has standby diesel generators, as there are places where there must always be power 24/7 (like in the CST – molecular lab).

So when it comes to stable power supply, UI and OAU are no match to Covenant University.

https://www.nairaland.com/3578855/canaanland-ota-now-generates-15mw

To add to the 15mw generated presently, CU decided to go green in her energy production. Only recently did the institution partner with Transcorp Power for power generation through solar energy!

Well, they obviously have a better research facilities...And a much better learning environment.

But you will still see some people that will come here to say their school is better because it "challenges then" and gives them "a taste of life".
And their definition of that is having a class containing 10 times the planned capacity, having to sort out lecturers, having others write their exams for them, and being pestered endlessly by cult groups.
Then you'll be seeing legions of educated illiterates everywhere trying to run down something because they were not privileged to have it.

After all, you found out its not easy to have a first class in a federal university, why? Is it because their students are dumb or they not well taught or the criteria for excellence is high? . I don't know where you got your stats from but as at 2016 UI led in research.
Even if CU produces 1million first class tomorrow, that's the work of the money they paid and CU criteria for exellence might be low compared to federal universities.

I can't be dumb enough to sight fallacy without addressing it immediately, you must have undergone a lot of stress to cook up your story. Are those lecturers in CU from Harvard? I bet majority are from those Federal Universities you condemn. Oh, that may indicate that those lecturers are not worthy to lecture in CU. Just calm down, CU will keep employing graduates of Federal Universities to lecture their students even tho they produce 100billion first class in a year.

10. GOOD GOVERNANCE

Good leadership/ Organization/ Transparency: Well, it is common fact that the performance of any system is determined by her leadership. It is also no news that bad governance is the bane of our federal universities such as OAU and UI. Unlike federal varsities where individuals fight to seize power at all cost and use it to their selfish advantage, to the detriment of the university community; Covenant University has a good, transparent and highly efficient leadership that has “never” witnessed anarchy once. Covenant University has a Board of Regent headed by Dr. David Oyedepo and other principal stakeholders that are also God-fearing men & women of God. These appoint the VC (the head of the university community) who in turn takes decision in accordance with the resolution of the senate. Decisions in Covenant University follow due processes that can never be by-passed by anybody! Unlike majority of our federal school (in which this is more expected of – being a public entity); CU has a working system that is bigger than any individual. The proofs of this are manifested in the following:

Stable academic calendar: nobody can halt the academic calendar for any reason. From the day you enter, you can check the calendar for the date you will graduate. Unlike OAU and UI that student’s wait for their convocation date to be announced! CU has never shutdown once or even witnessed strikes, riots, etc. since inception. Can we say the same for OAU and UI?

Look at what is obtainable in OAU and UI:

http://pulse.ng/student/university-of-ibadan-varsity-shut-down-indefinitely-over-students-protest-id4966344.html

Transparency: CU is a very transparent institution. Students' result for instance, cannot be influenced because the checks are computer based and can’t be compromised. The school has windows for everything ranging from course registration to class attendance upload, course evaluation and even result validation. Things ain’t just done haphazardly. Should one miss any of these windows for any reason, senate has to meet to take decision on that case if the reason(s) put forward are strong enough. For example a lecturer that did not upload a student’s result during the uploading window has to apply for do so, with valid proofs. After the close or result uploading window (which take a few days), Uploaded results cannot be recalled by the lecturer; it can only be validated by the student.

Result validation: Students can request for their scripts to be remarked during the result validation window, and if still not satisfied can request that it should be marked by another lecturer.

Mail system: Every CU student possess a unique university mail address (which follows a definite and known nomenclature pattern). Students also have their lecturers’ and top management officials’ email addresses. All mails sent to staffs by students are duly replied promptly. When I was in school; even though a number of students went to the VC’s office to discuss with him whenever they had an idea or concern, I hardly did such. I mostly communicated with whoever I wanted to via mail (pics attached).

Parley and Management meetings: Every semester in CU, compulsory sessions (for students and staff) are held where the students raise their concerns to management to be duly attended to. As far as you are speaking within the confines of the core values; you can even tell the VC what you don’t like about his leadership and how he can improve upon it! Again I doubt such exist in UI or OAU; where students hardly ever assemble in one sitting!

Core Values and Vision: Yes, CU has core values and visions and run tirelessly with them. Please what is/are the Core value(s) of UI? How about the vision of OAU? Maybe to be Oba Awon University. I hear the students say that a lot.

Spirituality: This is one core value of Covenant University which stands as an advantage that cannot be over-emphasized. In fact, the main reason for the high degree of transparency is not even the computer checks put in place but because the lecturers fear God. Hence, there is neither favouritism nor partiality in treatment of anyone, no matter who you are or where you come from. No wonder a lot of people that simply went to get education came out of CU with transformation; spirit, soul and body.

When I was in sch, I had a good number of conversations with staff at different levesl (including the vice chancellor); raising concerns that were duly attended to in a surprisingly short time frame. See the pictures that follow for some of those.

Leave him alone o..

I downloaded one of their so called research publications(msc thesis to be precise) back then while I was doing my undergraduate(BSc) project research. Reading through the literary review alone, I could see a lot of inconsistencies and I had to show one junior lecturer in my department, he just told me to look for other articles. This same thesis was signed by not less than 5 profs (most of which are visiting lecturers).

Anyone can upload anything. . It's all about the quality and not the quantity. .

In conclusion: Samguine once made a post titled "OAU: 10 Reasons It Is The Best Nigerian University (https://www.nairaland.com/3606552/oau-10-reasons-it-best)". Such a post can't be any more comical, since majority of the points were based on assumptions instead of verifiable facts. This explains and answers the question you may now ask: "why I have to use such amount of words/pics to drive home my point".

I strongly believe that claims relating to performance of higher institutions should be strictly based on verifiable facts - which the links and pictures provided will go a long way to buttress.

Lol.... Op thanks for the enlightenment. Even though I rep Great UNIBEN, no controverting the fact that CU is a badass school. The facts speak for themselves and that's legitimate considering our archaic public schools with their myriads of issues. Encountered students, high-tech industry guys and some visiting profs to the school. I've friends from public schools that have gone to CU to carry out some research work because they were the only ones with the required facilities and equipments (could be vice versa though). Seen a public university lecturer vow that all his kids will attend CU.
For those who have been privileged to travel out or studied in any of the specialized institutes @UNIPORT, UNIBEN, AUST, etc you'll attest to the fact that there's nothing compared to learning in a controlled and conducive environment. Okay, I just told you that you can have the CU experience studying some specialized programs in some schools and they even share resources too.

Your facts are true but your assertions are false
1. Google scholar is just one of the online repositories. No one worth is salt will base his all encompassing ranking on that. Anyone (any fool) can put stuff up on google scholar. Journal publications are the real ish
2. A huge chunk of your faculties are from these public universities.
3. You spoke of Alumni and said after Wole Soyinka, there isn't any other popular alumni from these public schools i.e UI and OAU, that is very laughable, before you make such statement you need to back it up. The guy who runs jobberman is from CU right? Or the guy who runs Kangpe ?. Nigeria's tech space is dominated by guys from these public schools. Your school is advertising so they will put up even names that dont count. (I haven't heard of most of the guys you mentioned as your esteemed alumni) that part was poor from you, do better.
4. Spirituality ? They force you all to worship in church, have you been to OAU or UI in thr evenings to see fellowship services?
5. Environment: you obviously have better and well equipped classes than the other 2 universities
6. One thing you didn't mention is overall experience. CU cant match any of those two in that
7. Quality of graduates : to confirm this, we will need to look at other areas apart from the presidential exam you mentioned to judge and make a far reaching decision.

Like i said you put out facts, but like Trump you tried to use weak statistics and some lies to buffer your predetermined assertions.

You carefully avoided the link I posted only to come up with this poppycock. I can't begin to tutor you on webometrics now. You may have to read and understand their different publications and rankings (which have different sections) carefully. follow the link and correct your mischies: http://repositories.webometrics.info/en/node/29 (pic is also attached).

At the bolded, TRUE but did you really read and comprehend the post before commenting Go through the first paragraph once again.
