According to the Book of Genesis, Esau was the fraternal twin brother of Jacob (whom God renamed Israel) - the patriarch and founder of the Israelites.

Esau and Jacob were the sons of Isaac and Rebekah, and grandsons of Abraham and Sarah.

The first one was very red at birth and covered with thick hair like a fur coat. So they named him Esau. Then the other twin was born with his hand grasping Esau’s heel. So they named him Jacob. (Gen 25: 25- 26)
