Yola - A former Nigerian governor sentenced to five years' jail for corruption has been granted bail to seek medical care after just 20 days in prison.
Bala James Ngilari of northeastern Adamawa state was the first senior government figure successfully prosecuted since President Muhammadu Buhari won elections two years ago, in part because of promises to fight endemic corruption.
State prosecutors objected but were overruled on Monday at the High Court in Yola, capital of Adamawa.
Judge Nathan Musa ordered Ngilari's release on bail after two prison officials testified he suffered from high blood pressure and his health was deteriorating.
Three weeks ago Musa convicted Ngilari of improperly awarding a $1bn contract to buy vehicles in 2015.
Adamawa is one of three states worst affected by Boko Haram's Islamic uprising.

What type of justice system are we running in this country.... Who cares if he had aids or HIV... The money stolen is enough to provide the prison yard a full effective Medical Center that would have treated him of the ailment..

I don't believe in Nigeria anymore...
Justice system is bleeped

They are considering his health because his rich , do you know hundred and thousands of inmates who are sick and yet could not get ordinary paracetamol talk more of granting such person bail over a health issue. There's really no headway for this country is a pity

And you think they actually wanted to jail him? If you had expected more than that, then you must be hallucinating. Ok let's go by the argument, is he the only corrupt ex-Governor in Nigeria? How many of them have been jailed and for how long? Medical check up cor meditrick fraud ni. And they're now flexing muscles as if they have done the impossible, anyway what more can be expected from a zoological republic.
