Igbo: We give no quarters, we seek none, we take no prisoners

The territory which the expedition now entered is called Esuama-Ebo, a district of large extent.

The religion of the natives is almost pure idolatry; but some slight traces of Judaism may be discovered in it - a circumstance which seems to indicate that some stray wanderers of the Hebrew race must long ago have found their way to these regions, and in the gradual course of time become assimilated to the natives both in appearance and customs, leavening the races around them, however, with a few of their own ideas.

Thus the people of Ebo believe in a God, Orissa or Tshuku, who is supreme and omnipotent; as well as in an evil spirit corresponding to Satan, whom they name Kamallo, or Igwik-Ala. When it is explained that Igivik means "one who has fallen from a place of honour," and that Ala denotes "earth," the parallel between Igwik-Ala and the fallen angel of the Scriptures may be readily recognized.

As the Jews had their sacred city Jerusalem, so the people of Ebo have their holy city Aro, to which they make many pilgrimages, as the followers of the Prophet do to Mecca.

Quitting Ebo, M. Burdo faced north-east, and presently reached N'Teja, which he found in a state of great excitement consequent on the king having declared war with his neighbours the Ogidis. King Ogene received the white man favourably enough, but absolutely forbade him to advance further into his territories. He promised, however, to show M. Burdo another route by which the Niger might be reached.

The apparent reason for this course of action on the king's part was that he feared that the white man's presence among his enemies, the Ogidis, might bring with it the favour of the Great Spirit. After witnessing a curious religious rite, by which King Ogene sought to propitiate the god Tshuku in favour of his arms, M. Burdo departed in a northerly direction
towards Imam.

The natives of Ebo are a fierce and war-loving people. Giving no quarter and seeking none, they make neither slaves nor prisoners, but put all captives to death without mercy. They carry out the stern old code, "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth," to the letter. If a man murders another, the victim's relatives pursue the murderer to the death; and if the assassin finally escapes, some one of his relatives suffers death in his stead, and thus justice is appeased.

The story touches Eboes(Ibo), Ogene(somewhere in Delta or Onisha) considering the Ogidi people. Great story

We have always been practicing Judaism way before the white man came to us.

My grandfather never believed in Christianity, and he always believed in a form of Judaism, he told us it was the normal practice in their kindred...
I did not know about that form of religion until i learnt about Judaism, well all things being equal.... we know who we are.

The story is interesting. Its seems that author started his travel at Isu-ama (which he called Esuama)

He refered to Olisah or Chukwu (Orissa or Tshuku) which is how Igbos say God

The man was tongue tied to say "Igwe-Kala" calling it 'Igvikala'

It is also interesting that the author travelked to Nteje at a time the were at war with the Ogidi people

ogene is the name of the king(likely a warlord not a real king) but nteje is the name of the town.

Your sarcasm reeks of ignorance. When discrediting a reference be certain you are well informed. Ogene is very common and well rooted in Igbo culture.

It is very curious now that Nteje has no direct boundary with Ogidi now. What happened. When did Umunya the town between Nteje and Ogidi come into the picture?
Ndi Nteje, if Ogene were to be alive now, would such a travesty be entertained?

when i read about our Glorious past , i keep asking myself where did the igbo generation of today get things wrong ? how come the igbos are now almost a race without power so much that useless fulani herdsmen now have the temerity which they never had to attack the East and a useless good for nothing traditional rule could be found to be threathening to drown the igbo race in a lagoon.

Where really did the igbo race get things wrong ?

You diabolically claim to meet the white man before us, yet the white man called us almost civilized, and called you barbarians. ..

You diabolically claim to have free education and studied above us, yet statistics showed we far above you in education

You diabolically claimed to be high IQ people, yet all test showed we are above you

You diabolically claimed we are canibalistic, yet it is evident that you are ritualist and human head miner.

You diabolically claim sophistication, yet it's evident you can stay on you own or rule yourselves

You diabolically scheme with your evil master and destroyed us, yet statistics showed you are not better than us

You diabolically stole our wealth, yet it's evident you are not richer than us

You diabolically claimed to be the first in all things, yet it's evident lack behind...

You diabolically claim to be championing for a restructure Nigeria, yet we are the only people protesting for what we believed in

You diabolically claim indispensable, yet you are nothing with your master and can't rule champion a separate identity and diabolically hate those who champion a separate identity

My afonjo people, you are nobody but diabolical hater

It's simple. CHRISTIANITY!

This religion with its message of love had made us handicapped. We forgot that for there to be love and peace, there must be WAR.

Right now, we are getting enlightenment and the Afonjas can't help but feel insecure.
