South Korea is in talks about holding joint drills with a U.S. aircraft carrier strike group, it said on Monday.

The country's Defence Ministry spokesman Moon Sang-gyun gave no further details about the plans, other than saying Seoul was holding discussions with the U.S. Navy.

"I can say the South Korean and U.S. militaries are fully ready for North Korea's nuclear test," he said.

The U.S. President Donald Trump was also due to call Chinese President Xi Jinping after speaking with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe earlier that day, amid fears North Korea could conduct another nuclear test.

North Korea said at the weekend it was ready to sink the U.S. aircraft carrier, which Trump had ordered to waters off the Korean peninsula as a warning to the North.

And Japan said on Sunday it had sent two Japanese to join the carrier group, led by the USS Carl Vinson, for drills.

Abe described his conversation with Trump as a "thorough exchange of views".

He said: "We agreed to strongly demand that North Korea, which is repeating its provocation, show restraint.

"We will maintain in close contact with the United States, keep a high level of vigilance and respond firmly."

Abe also said he and Trump agreed that China, North Korea's neighbour and sole major ally, should play a large role in dealing with Pyongyang.

North Korea arrests and detains US professor at airport as he attempts to leave secretive country

North Korea has detained an American professor as he was attempting to leave the secretive country.
Korean-American Tony Kim had spent a month teaching an accounting course at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), the university's chancellor, Chan-Mo Park said.
Kim, who also goes by his Korean name Kim Sang-duk and is in his fifties, was detained by North Korean officials at Pyongyang International Airport as he attempted to leave the country, Park said.
His arrest comes just hours after dictator Kim Jong-Un warned the country will wipe America "off the face of the Earth" after accusing the US of planning a chemical weapons attack.

Park said he did not know the cause of Kim's arrest.
He added: "But some officials at PUST told me his arrest was not related to his work at PUST.
"He had been involved with some other activities outside PUST such as helping an orphanage."

Kim Jong-un smiles and laughs while inspecting dead pigs during bizarre visit to North Korean abattoir

The North Korean leader visited the Thaechon Pig Farm of the Korean People's Army in a show of support to his troops

Kim Jong-un was pictured smiling and laughing alongside officials as he toured an abattoir on one of North Korea's many military bases.
Two million of his subjects may be starving - but that seemed to be the last thing on the despot's mind when he visited the Thaechon Pig Farm, which supplies the country's army.
Kim was snapped inspecting pig pens and carcasses following a UN report claiming millions of people living inside the world's most secretive state are struggling to survive on handouts.
The daily ration includes just 650g of maize, rice or meat, according to the UN.

U.S. Holds War Games With Allies As North Korea Vows to Wipe Enemies Off the Earth

Two warships of a major U.S. Navy formation joined Washington allies South Korea and Japan for simultaneous, bilateral military exercises Tuesday as tensions flared in the Asia-Pacific region. Miles in between the two war drills, North Korea held its own military tests in defiance of threats suggesting potential military action against the government of Kim Jong Un by President Donald Trump and his administration.
The Navy's Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Wayne E. Meyer conducted maritime military drills with South Korea's Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin-class multirole guided-missile destroyer Wang Geon in the waters west of the Korean Peninsula, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Navy's Seventh Fleet. At the same time, a second Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, Fitzgerald, began naval exercises with Japan's Kongo-class guided-missile destroyer Chokai in the sea west of Japan. Both Navy ships were part of the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike group recently dispatched to the Western Pacific amid reports that North Korea may perform its sixth nuclear weapons test, something that the White House has vowed to prevent from happening.
