The chaps at the CIES Football Observatory often pull out some interesting numbers and when it comes to the top dribblers in the top five leagues, they have done so again.

When you think of the best dribblers in Europe a few names immediately come to mind: Neymar, Eden Hazard and Leo Messi.

However, none of those big names are the best dribbler in Europe, according to CIES Football Observatory.



The CIES Observatory dribbling index

The CIES Observatory explain their dribbling index as follows:


The dribbling index is calculated by dividing the number of dribbles attempted by the percentage of successful ones.



This allows them to take into account dribbling skills from both a quantitative and a qualitative perspective.

So the key to understanding the graphic below is:

** % successful dribbles

Adama Traore comes out on top
The big surprise is that Middlesbrough winger Adama Traore comes out on top in this particular list and is claimed to be the best dribbler in Europe’s top five leagues.

Whilst Eden Hazard and Neymar are in second and fourth respectively, Bastia’s Allan Saint-Maximin is another player who will surprise many.

Consistent dribblers Leo Messi, Moussa Dembele and Alexis Sanchez also make the top 10 here.

Two West Ham stars (Manuel Lanzini and Michail Antonio) are in the top 20. As are Marco Verratti and Paul Pogba.
