Igbo Names And Region by Probz(m): 12:56am On May 10, 2017 |
We all know how common variant names (aka Ngozi/Nkoli, Okeke/Okekere) are in the east, just like whole names unique to certain areas. Which ones do you think of? I associate Nne/anna, Kalu and Ogbonna with the eastern/Cross River Igbo (Ohafia, Afikpo/Edda, Bende) and Agalamanyi with Nsukka area. How about unu? |

Re: Igbo Names And Region by Kirigidi(m): 11:03pm On Jun 21, 2017 |
OMANBALA1:OSA and OSE are Edoid prefixes for GOD. Both names mean the same; i.e. they refer to GOD. E.g. Osamede, Osamwese, Osaretin are Bini-Ishan names making references to "OSANOBUA/ OSENOBUWE". Urhobo's actual ancient name for GOD is "OSONOBRUGHWE" which is similar to the Bini-Ishan's. The name "OGHENE" actually means "Lord". That was why the "king of Ife" in ancient times was known to Edoid people as "Oghene Uhe" meaning the "Lord of Ife". However, the name OGHENE is now exclusively being used to honour and refer to GOD by Urhobo-Isoko people. 1 Like |

Probz:Makes sense. I was told Okonkwo is more common in Imo State than Okoronkwo and people that answered Okoronkwo in Imo State were originally from Abia and Ebonyi States. I had doubts about that though. |

These names are peculiar to Abians too, particularly the Bendes, Ohafia areas: For females: Uzoaru (Uzo aro), Orjiugo, Ugbalu (ogbei alu), Oyidiya (sounds more like 'Oyidiye' in the local dialect), Ori (Oriaku), Ucha, Nkediya, etc. Males: Anyaele, Ugorji, Ndukwo (Ndukwe), Iheke, Ejere, Ogbu, Ogburu, Uguru, Igwo (igwho), Eke, Oko (okobuo), Eme, ( I don't know if the full name is Emenike), Mbada, onyehara, Lekwuwa, Chukwu (notice, nothing attached), Elesie, Elendu, Onwuchekwa, Onwuka, Okai, etc... CC. Bigfrancis1, Pazienza, probz, afam4eva/afam4ever Do you know if these names are exclusive to these clans/regions/sub groups? Modified.. |

Eke40seven: I know one family from Nnewi who answer that surname so I dunno about that one. Okai sounds eastern Igbo to the core though. |
