There's always the PAIN behind the FAME. Sometimes even the most successful celebrities do have issues as well.
Since the first known case of HIV/AIDS was diagnosed decades ago, a lot has changed in healthcare since the 1980’s, and being diagnosed with symptoms of HIV and AIDS is no longer a death sentence.

While many people still live full lives after a diagnosis, it is no less shocking when someone in the public eye comes out as being HIV positive. Let's take a look at several celebrities who's HIV/AIDS status went public.


Magic Johnson
NBA Legend and business mogul Magic Johnson received his HIV diagnosis in 1991. Being very open about the disease, he considers himself a “messenger for God in terms of letting people know about HIV and AIDS.”


Charlie Sheen
Sheen is the most recent celeb on this list to go public with his HIV positive diagnosis. He admitted his diagnosis on November 17, 2015 on the Today show. He has also been very open about his drug abuse and risky sexual encounters over the years.

Freddy Mercury
Freddy Mercury was the songwriter, producer, and lead vocalist for the legendary band Queen. He was known for his strong vocals and over-the-top stage persona. At the time of his death from AIDS complications in 1991, he was the first major rock star to die from the disease.

Rock Hudson
Rock Hudson was the first major celebrity to publicly reveal his HIV positive diagnosis. He was the leading man in many 1950’s and 1960’s films. His publicist released a statement in 1985 claiming that the actor contracted HIV from a blood transfusion during an earlier operation, but it was speculated that Hudson was secretly homosexual and contracted the disease through unprotected s8x.

Viktor Luna
Viktor Luna is a fashion designer who made it to the final stages of Project Runway’s Cycle 9. During the show, he revealed his diagnosis to two fellow contestants on air.

Greg Louganis
Greg Louganis is a US Olympic diver who was diagnosed as being HIV positive in 1988. He spread his message through his autobiography Breaking The Surface and by being an LGBT rights activist

Rudy Galindo
Another Olympic star, figure skater Rudy Galindo has won the 1996 US National Championship, 1987 World Junior Championship, and was a 1996 World Bronze Medalist. He announced that he was HIV positive in 2000.

Holly Johnson
English artist, musician and writer Holly Johnson was the lead vocalist in Frankie Goes to Hollywood. He was diagnosed in 1991

Jerry Herman
Having been diagnosed in 1985, Herman has been living with his HIV positive diagnosis for over a quarter of a century. He is the musical genius behind the scores of legendary Broadway shows such as Hello, Dolly!

Robert Reed
You may recognize this face as “the dad” Mike Brady from The Brady Bunch. Robert Reed died from colon cancer in 1992, although doctors believe that his HIV had something to do with his death as well

Eazy-E
NWA Rapper Eazy-E died at a very young age from AIDS complications. In 1995, he went to the hospital to be treated for what he believed to be asthma. He died from AIDS complications only a month later


Władziu Valentino Liberace
Simply known as Liberace, this legendary pianist and entertainer’s career spanned four decades. At the age of 67, he died from AIDS-related pneumonia

Gil-Scott Heron
Heron was well known as a musician and musician, author and poet in the soul and jazz community. He was diagnosed in 2008 and died in 2011 at the age of 62.

Keith Haring
Keith Haring is perhaps one of the most popular street artists in history. His artwork is recognizable all over New York City.

Perry Ellis
Ellis is one of the few celebs on this list who kept his illness from being public news. He died from viral encephalitis in 1985 but always keep his illness a secret.

Althea Flynt
Not a Hollywood celebrity, but Althea Flynt was a star in the publishing world. She had a very advanced condition of AIDS and overdosed on prescription drugs at the age of 33. She is pictured below with husband Larry Flynt of Flynt Publishing.

Tom Waddell
Did you know there is a Gay Olympics? Founder Tom Waddell was diagnosed with AIDS in 1985 in San Francisco and died two years later.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti
Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti was a brilliant musician, singer, composer, and human rights activist from Nigeria. Fela was known for his vocal criticism of the Nigerian government. He died from AIDS related complications in 1997.


Gene Anthony Ray
Actor Gene Anthony Ray best known for his role in Fame. He died at the age of 41 from a stroke, and it was revealed as being HIV positive at the time of his death.

Michael Lupo
Michael Lupo was the famed Italian serial killer. He was arrested and charged in Britain, where he died due to AIDS complications.
