I see story after story about the insane thing we see done by Governors like the state assembly is dead. Nairaland gets angry hisses then back to status quo. The people in effected states don't seem to care too much.

Zamfara governor Abdul'aziz Abubakar Yari blamed meningitis on fornication. Yet the facts are World health organization warned about Meningitis before hand. The out breaks have been going on for past 5 years seasonally but they remained unprepared.

Now he's accused of spending bail out money to build hotel in Lagos by Sahara reporters. This is just an accusations so far. No charges have been pressed and the state assembly hasn't probed him.

A few have been but it needs to blatant acts. Also the governor hasn't bought loyalty. We had a few cases where they have been. Just most of the time in cases like Zamfara nobody from that state really cares. Another example is the Kwara thread.

What it literally takes is readily known.

Hardly any Nigerians care how their governors misuse state resources because, with the partial exception of a few southern states which are increasing their IGR, it's not their money being misused to begin with. Federal allocation money "magically" comes from Abuja without anybody having to work for it, so who cares if a governor embezzles money that didn't originate from his subjects' own sweat?

There's nothing peculiar to Nigerians about this problem, as it will arise anywhere the state doesn't depend on its citizens for its revenues. It's the same reason why Saudi princes can buy fancy yachts and sports cars, build opulent palaces, go on massive shopping sprees, etc., without the average Saudi giving a damn. As long as they get to go sit in air-conditioned offices for a few hours and get paid for pretending to work, why should the lazy, half-educated Saudis care what their elite get up to in private, or while they're away in the West?

Nigeria's tragedy is that the federal allocation system has bred Saudi-style complacency about corruption, but instead of 30 million Saudis living off the rents from 12 million barrels per day of oil, Nigeria has 180 million subsisting on what's left over from just 2 million barrels a day, after Nigeria's elites have had their fill, of course.

The only thing that takes a governor to be impeached is if he doesn't bribe lawmakers adequately.
