Well, people have shortsightedness...especially when you are looking at things with the eyes of the flesh and you lack the understanding to see beyond letters. . U are so right on point. Some persons read the bible thinking everything therein should be taken literally. Some expressions in the bible are very figurative and thus have symbolic meanings. Imagine interpreting the book of Revelation literally... the wild beasts, the horse men, the great dragon, the creature with seven heads e.t.c . All those have symbolic meanings.

Admitted, those people where better intellectually, physically and health wise. This is because they were nearer to the time of the paradise. Since the paradise, everything on earth including human has been going through steady decline.
Those instances of great deeds that you mentioned happened mostly as a result of supernatural intervention. They where miracles.
