Irohinoodua witnessed armed thugs loyal to the government of Ekiti State today launched an attack on petrol stations believed to be owned by members of the opposition in the state. The petrol stations were attacked and destroyed in a dawn raid by loyalists of the state governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose. At least 3 petrol stations were attacked on the main highway and another 3 on the Bank Road in the state capital.

Our correspondent saw tens of filling stations attacked by the thugs who brandished shot guns, bayonets, cutlasses and big sticks. Many of the petrol stations were broken down into pieces by the thugs. In one instance, a young attendant was attacked with cutlass at Odo-Ado area of the state capital.

“The attack started early in the morning. Many of our people were isolated for attack. They came with guns and cutlasses and brought down edifices in the state”, Alhaja Funmi Alonge whose brother owns a petrol station in the state told Irohinoodua this morning.

Witnesses said no fewer than 10 petrol stations belonging to members of the opposition All Progressives Congress, (APC) were singled out for attack by the irate mob.

The APC and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in the state have been involved in neck-to-neck battle over the control of the tempestuous political space. The APC had accused the Governor Ayodele Fayose’s government of seeking vendetta by destroying the business ventures of the opposition in the state.

“What we are seeing is state thugery. Ekiti has been turned into an axis of evil. This is quite embarrassing. We see a situation whereby the state is engaged in violence against those leading the economic venture in the state. This is quite unfortunate.”
