Chemical engineering is good.

Aside the oil industry (exploration and Production) they work in Breweries, Paint industry, Petrochemicals, Refineries, and co.

However you have to work very hard and graduate with a good grade. By good grade I mean a minimum of 2nd Class Upper.

It makes job hunting easier even without an M.Sc.
Thank you very much sir, I still have another question
Is there any correlation between Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry?
Is the latter very much good as Chem Engine and can one do MSc in Chem Engine or any Engineering related field using Industrial Chemistry BSc?

Yes, there will be. chemical engineering is versatile even outside the oil field. You can work in food and beverages, manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceutical, even in IT, etc.

But go for mechanical engineering. It is the most versatile engineering. A mechanical engineering graduate can handle almost every job a chemical engineer can handle in most industries but there are so many roles a mechanical engineer can handle that a chemical engineer will never be considered for.

Make sure you finish with first class or at least a 2.1.

Thank you so much sir,
I have never for once gave Mech Engine a thought. I just like Chem Engine

I was even thinking of doing Geology then switch over to chemical Engineering in 200 level
Does that make sense?

No! Does not.

If you wanna go for chemical engineering, then start from 100 level. Changing is not as easy as you think. Don't get stuck with a course you don't want.

Industrial chemistry is a good course and yeah, you can further your education with an MSc in chemical engineering. They are both similar courses, however chemical engineering is wider as it covers almost every aspect of industrial chemistry and some aspects of mechanical engineering.

There is usually some bias for chemical engineering in the industry over industrial chemistry. So if you are yet to enroll, then stick to chemical engineering.

Think outside oil and gas. Your future is bright. Even amongst engineers, only a fraction work in the oil industry. So don't be discouraged.

Young Geoscientists in the house this is a golden opportunity.

The opportunities are few, when they come grab them with both hands and legs.

cc: niyogeol

You can also see that they did not ask for M.Sc.

I will soon share my Shell recruitment experiences.

This thread has been relatively quiet. I will appreciate more inputs from geoscientists working in the industry.

I know your schedule(s) is/are tight, but endeavour to contribute here so that we can learn one or two things from you.

A big thank you to people who have contributed earlier.

@ OP, thank you for this thread.

I just graduated with a B.Sc in Geology and waiting for NYSC. Going through this thread and comments have made me realize I'm in for bigger challenges, harsh realities and intense competition out there.

I'd sum up the comments so far as a wake up call/reminder and I know they'll all help in making better decisions in my career.
So to every undergraduate within the Geosciences field, please don't give up but rather step up your game and plans towards a better future.

Thanks everyone.

1. Economic geology is not available anywhere as first degree

2. Don't try it

PS: never ever enrol in geoscience with the motivation of working in oil industry, you'll be gutted. Oil companies will take 10 engineers before considering 1 GEOSCIENTIST.i think our lecturers use oil job too encourage us and it kinda slips into our head.
If you wanna enrol Geoscience, do it cos you love it, and have it in mind you might never practice without an MSC. Like my oga will say, it's a professional course

OP,
Saw your topic earlier, decided to sit back a little and see what kind of comments come in... and I'm not surprised in the least.

I understand your request for info from fellow geoscientists who managed to get into well paying positions in IOCs, but the truth is very few, if any, would want their online identities associated with such lucrative stories. It's not the sharing of information that is the problem, its the risk of having your I.D hacked, personal info retrieved, and then some not-so-nice gentlemen paying you a visit later in the evening. Sad, but its the reality. IOC-employed geos are extremely well paid and in a country as insecure as Nigeria, disclosing that you are one may not be such a good idea.

Luckily though, i am not one. smiley ... but i know a few. I studied geophysics, graduated some donkey years ago and had a shot with SPDC's SITP program. Passed all the tests and interviews like no man's biz, and got invited for medicals... and that was it. They kept me waiting for almost 18months and then one morning like that, i got a mail that Shell was no longer interested in continuing my employment process. smiley Sh!t like that can devastate a young man; i know it devastated me... But hey, I've since moved on.

Ok, that was my story. But you're not interested in that; what you want is how you can succeed where i failed. No problem, I'll tell you.

1) A Masters degree
2) Some experience, the closer to your desired job role, the better. That's how most OND holders get in: they've got experience while all you have is a piece of paper.
3) Network. If you have any relative or friend already employed there, better start kissing his or her ass now.
4) Luck. That's right, pure dumb luck... a lots of it.
5) Perseverance. The fanatic kind... cos that's the only way you'll dedicate 10yrs of your life just to get an employment offer from Exxon.

Finally, a word of advice: Geoscience is a very dry field right now; new drilling contracts are virtually nonexistent worldwide, so you need to decide if that's a field you want to go into. Learn an alternative skill; if it can also be applied to you chosen geo-career, even better. But whatever you do, don't spend your youth waiting for a job offer that may never come.

Cheers.

He said it all ooo

Economic Geology is not not limited to Solid minerals alone, but within the Nigerian context, it is mainly attached with it. Your best bet is to get into academics or prefarably look overseas. If Economic Geology really catches your fancy, I will suggest you look towards Finland, Germany and possibly Canada. If you graduate with a good GPA, you will sure get funding in Finland and Canada.

If you are still in school, I will implore you to look at other specialisations you have affinity for. Like some posters above have rightly said, it is really difficult kick-starting a geoscience career in Nigeria, but with determination, dedication, and luck, one will definitely get in - wether the Oil industry or Solid mineral sector.

I have friends who are making head way with geophysical survey and borehole drilling. One thing with this is that you have to justle for contracts. This is one field that some graduates of geoscience are self practicing within Geoscience.

I hope this helps.

Thanks man , I'm trying to weigh my options, the oil sector in Nigeria is too competitive. Moreover,Petroleum geology is part of economic geology.

@Eusuph99, You should consider Engineering Geology or Environmental Geology. This two won't limit you to the Oil industry.

As for me, am still hoping for my grand entering to the Industry.
Re: Geoscientists Working In The Oil Industry: How Did You Get In? Share Your Story. by deadkamalu: 6:05am On Jun 15, 2017
I have a bachelor in geology and I have never practised for a day. I went into business immediately after NYSC but now I have time and some money with me and I will like to further my studies.

After the geology of Africa and nigeria field trip we had during my school days I picked interest in economic geology and geochemistry.

I was thrilled with what I saw at many quarry site and I dreamt of handling one my self in future, lol.

My academic adviser also told me how he made good millions selling drill mud(bentonite) all these elicited my interest in economic geology and finally I saw how Lebanese and Chinese are hitting it big doing illegal exploration and exploitation in taraba state.

I never really liked the oil industry, maybe I am scared of the competition.

Will be glad if I can get any mentor on the aforementioned area of specialisation.

Without much text book definition, let me quickly introduce what environmental geology is - The application of geology principles in solving environmental problems. Opportunities abound in this field. It is not limited to Oil & Gas sector alone.

As an environmental geologist, if you know and understand what you've been trained for, you can be writing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the construction, and mining industry as required by law for such projects. Note that writing of EIA is not limited to environmental geologists alone.

Waste Management - Environmental Geologists with their knowledge can help locate sites for waste recycling, disposal and other activities without poluting/spreading contaminants to underground aquifers, and also to trace the level of contamination.

Environmental Remediation - The importance of this expertise can't be overstated. Environmental remediation involves cleaning contaminated or polluted land or water bodies and returning them to their natural state as much as possible. In Lagos State for instance, there is LASEPA - Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, that is responsible for environmental policy formulation, and enforcement of environmental laws in the state. They decide and control the level of treatment industrial waste must undergo before it can be diacharged into water bodies. On another hand, they monitor clean-up of polluted sites by companies that causes the pollution wether due to failure of equipment or personnel.

Of note is our own very Niger Delta that has witnessed and still witnessing various degree of pollution due to exploration and production of hydrocarbons activities by Energy companies. It is due to this menace that HYPREP, and Ogoni clean-up were launched. The Ogoni clean up in particular will require expertise of environmentalists (biologists, chemists, geologists et al) for the job. Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board is already training people for this.

Pardon my sermon. I decided to talk much about environmental remediation because I believe there is so much to be done there. One can be employed by the energy companies or contractors who do the job on their behalf.

Another career option is to work as an HSE person in any organisation.

PS: I have only stated the possible career path for an environmental geologist in Nigeria. There are other career path one can venture into.

If you are really interested in this field, please avail your self the opportunity to register on nogicjqs.com - this portal is owned and operated by Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board, a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources. They sponsor Nigerians for Oil Spill and Environmental Remediation Training from time to time. Niger Delta Development Commission also sponsor Niger Deltans alike for the same program.

World over, MSc is becoming the bench mark for entry level Geoscience positions, so endeavour to earn one.

Wishing you success in your career.

words alone cannot express my gratitude and appreciation for this enlightenment bro. Many geologists like me have never thought that there's a niche for environmental geology in the oil and gas industry. you gave me one kind of a courage to cling onto the environmental sector by stating the various roles this field plays and fit into. I am now even planning to do my IT with my state's environmental protection agency (BOSEPA).. #I always remain loyal my senior geologist and forever be indebted for this
