Why do Ndi'Igbo still believe the false stereotype that the omo Oduduwa (Yoruba) are cowards? In the history of Nigeria, only two men have returned to Nigeria to face almost certain death even when they had the option of a very comfortable political asylum abroad. Both of them are Yoruba.

In 1985, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida toppled the Buhari regime while Major General Tunde Idiagbon (mixed Yoruba/Fulani) was at Mecca yet Idiagbon returned. In 1995, Olusegun Obasanjo (pure Owu Yoruba) was accused of planning a coup by the blood thirsty tyrant, Abacha (if you don't like the truthful description of Abacha you can go and join him where he is) while he was away in Copenhagen. He returned to face almost certain death.

I admired Ojukwu, but I was disappointed that he fled. I wish he remained. I also admired Azikiwe, but Awolowo would NEVER abandon his people as Azikiwe did when he defected to the federal side during the civil war. Awolowo was in prison because of his people and he could have been released had he compromised his beliefs but he stoutly refused. That is courage not cowardice. I have been in direct communication with Gowon whom I admire but he did not return after he was accused of being behind the Dimka coup.

Obasanjo and Idiagbon are probably the bravest Nigerians ever. They are certainly braver than Murtala Mohammed who was safely in London waiting for Joseph Garba and co to topple Gowon. The stereotype of Yorubas as cowards is false. Every ethnicity has cowards and brave men.

As we celebrate #BiafraAt50, I hope the Yoruba and Igbo can find common ground and unite as Southern Nigeria's two main ethnic nationalities otherwise the South will continue to be politically disadvantaged even when it is the most educationally advantaged part of Nigeria.

Even before the advent of the britain...Yorubas are the only tribe in nigeria that fought civil war with themselves.

Egba vesus oyo empire is an example.

Reno Omokri is Afonja. grin grin
There are three perspectives to a man or an ethnic group namely:
1. How you see yourself.
2. How others see you.
3. What you really are.
A certain tribe has through propaganda, lies, hatred and half-truths projected an image of themselves and others dishonestly. It doesn't change the truth.

This is one of those rare times I'm agreeing with Reno. He has said it as it is. Igbo seem to have this exaggerated self-ego and hubris. The man has provided good fact to back up his claim - Ojukwu ran away; Gowon remained in Europe after he was toppled - unlike the duo of Obj and Idiagbon. Tthough I don't like tribal politics and I'm not even a Yoruba, but I think this should shatter the false vintage of my Igbo brothers (and I'm not Igbo grin).

Abiola's bravery is uncommon in Nigeria's history and without him, we would probably still be under military rule today.

As long as Kwara a hitherto Yoruba land remains the Fulani property, cowardice is spelled out.

Abiola saga, Awolowo's shameful suicide, Ogundipe fleeing to London even when not threatened, the other general crying and begging a subordinate to spare him, Mile12 saga, Hausa and Yoruba olotun beans sellers clash in Osun... ..etc

I have many reasons to call them bloody cowards...

Ojukwu has right to run away because he he was fighting on multiple fronts....no Yoruba dead or alive can fight on just 2 fronts....but as for zik, his greedy to preserve his name took a better part of him

Obasanjo was just up against abacha, but ojukwu was up against both Yoruba, Hausa Fulani's and minorities, then, British the true owner of Nigeria.... Ojukwu was fighting war where his people were been killed ....There is no comparison between Obj and ojukwu situation, neither is there a comparison between awo and zik situation... Diabolical suffercated yorubas always find way to twist everything...

It is better to start a fight and make a tactical retreat than to commit suicide without the actual fight taking place.

It amounts to sheer cowardice for a man who truly won an election to be seized and locked up and eventually murdered alongside his wife without his people protesting.

No a single comparison between Ojukwu and any of the other actors. But these people don't get it.

Will they ever hear

They keep learning the hard away.

Underestimate the Yorubas at your own peril.

Funny enough, their acclaimed masters whom they revere in deed and thought and whose assss they are ready to lick anytime anyday, the aboookis, are very wary of us and NEVER take us for granted. smiley grin

We can't also forget Lt Col Fajuyi who a had all the opportunity to abandon his Igbo guest but bravely decided to die with him , of recent we cant forget the case of Olisa Metuh and Fani Kayode who both started out as great critics of the Buhari govt but immediately after their first rounds of incarceration Olisa Metuh has cowardly gone dumb while FFK despite many arrest is still blowing fire and brimstone against the Buhari govt
