Mariam Nabatanzi is a single mother residing in Ugandan left by her husband to cater for their 38 children alone.

According to a video shared on Twitter by @storyteld, Mariam is a 39-year-old Ugandan woman with 38 children. In the video which was translated into English, she said that the children would have been 44 but due to death of 6 children, they are 38 in number.

Mariam who was married off at the young age of 13, wanted 6 kids only, but she suffered a rare health condition called “Hyper Ovulation”. As a result of this, whenever she got pregnant, she gave birth to either twin, more twins, triplets, or quadruplets. Hyper Ovulation occurs when a woman’s ovaries release more than one egg. This increases the chance of twins, triplets or more.

Mariam tried it with birth control, but the results she got were disastrous. According to the video, she tried both the pill and the injection, but it never worked. She also tried the vaginal ring, but her body reacted negatively to it. She almost died and as such, she gave up.

The 38 children are all born to the same man who is absent. As a result of this, Mariam if left to cater for the children and support her family single handedly. In order to do so, she engages in odd jobs.

Despite the daily challenge of caring for the children, Mariam says her 38 children are “a blessing and not a burden”.
