Nigerian doctors that couldn't save my friend who died a few weeks ago.

Nigerian doctors that told my mentor (a professor) that he had cancer when it was just stomach ulcer. The poor old man thought he was going to die until his son took him abroad for treatment.

Sha, I don't blame then, this could try is full of sh*t and the good doctors have all left this shithole for better countries. How do you expect a doctor, after spending almost 10 years in school to be earning 60k in one general hospital and then expect him to do well?

Actually more and worse misdiagnoses happen abroad too. Including women made to undergo mastectomy (breast amputation) without actually having breast cancer!

A very top hospital in Europe forgot the placenta inside my neighbour after delivery! Incredible consider that I knew the labour ward staff quite well. Some of the best in the business. It was falling out by itself after she was discharged.

Pray tell, how did someone miss that? How did nobody examine the placenta and record findings as is the routine?

I have many more baffling examples.

A UK prime minister once resigned after being falsely diagnosed with terminal illness. A few decades back but still.

but on a serious note, we have really Good doctors here.
we are our own problem.
most hospitals are short-staffed and the doctors are overworked. With Nigeria taking the negative lead in several global health indicators, health personnel who should help reverse the tide are in short supply across the country with training and recruitment increasingly ebbing.
Currently, the country has a little above 600 paediatricians to care for its over 40 million children, compared to the United Kingdom’s over 5,000 for 20 million children. The figures are more depressing in other areas of medical specialisation. With the rising cases of cancer across the country, there are only a little above 15 oncologists; 10 neurosurgeons to attend to issues related to the nervous system; and 120 urologists to manage conditions related to the male urinary tract and reproductive organs such as prostate, kidney, bladder cancers, prostate cancer, testicular cancers, infertility in men, sexual dysfunction etc.
There's no motivation at all for these doctors, causing them to handle their work with less care.
many of them are underpaid, less widely appreciated and undergo professionalism with tears.
When those in power learn to start doing the right thing, then we'd start getting the right appraisals.
got to get the economy right so the masses have purchasing power and disposable income

I will talk to you like you have gotten admisssion already.
First and foremost, are you sure it is what you truly want, how bad do u want it? Some day you will wake up and regret it o. This is normal.

Second, if medicine didnt pay well in three years time, not just in nigeria but worldwide, would you still do it?

Third, is the God you worship with you on this and have you confirmed it?

Fourth, please realise that you need to work hard enough and keep thinking in your mind for medicine alone, do not entertain thoughts of failing or anything else, work hard like you have no God and pray like you have not read.

Fifth, please realise that medicine is hard, but my tip, you just need to work hard to pass, but if you want to go for distinction please feel free but balance is key.

Sixth, medicine is not about being brilliant ask any doctor, but being smart, being able to conform to the norm and still be able to think out of the box. When you get in you will see many people more brillant than you failing and getting withdrawn.

Last, medicine is a team effort. It is one thing they teach you. Dont be afraid to ask for help. Pls also learn a skill you love apart from medicine, one of my classmates was a model, three were artists, they could charge 100k per drawing, two were into IT and computer stuff, two were fashion designers. I was a baker and pastry coinesseur. It is very important to develop a life outside med school.
