The management of Wema Bank Plc. and Sterling Bank Plc. are both currently shopping for a replacement for their group managing directors (GMDs) whose tenures expired in June and December respectively, Bussiness247 Online News has exclusively revealed.

It would be recalled that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2010, issued a circular that the MDs/CEOs of Nigerian banks shall no longer spend more than 10 years in office as part of efforts to sanitise the banking sector. One year after this circular, a number of banks: Zenith, UBA and Skye lost their MDs/CEOs to this policy.

I am somewhat impressed with Wema's performance except for the unnecessary waste of shareholders' fund on a second rebranding project when the first in my own opinion was needed and a success, the second I think was just to enrich some Josephs that must become prime ministers in the Egypt of Wema Bank.

I'm sure there are eligible candidates in Nigeria but I also they look beyond tribal sentiments in selecting the eventual replacements

If it is true that the banks are shopping for successors for the two MDs, that will be so sad. How could the two of them not be able to raise successors within the banks during their tenures. #failure of leadership

They have more than capable Executive Directors who have worked in the bank for donkey years and know the system.

All over the world, you rarely see people from outside take the rings of a corporation except in cases where the company is not performing well, it was taken over, liquidated or merged.

Sterling in particular needs a new direction. They've played at the lower tier for too long and seem to be comfortable there.
