Oyekunle Ayinde Olukotun, (or Kunle, for short) was born in the mid-sixties in London, to a Nigerian family from the Southwestern part of that country. His first name 'Oyekunle' means 'royalty fills the house.' He grew up in Nigeria, spending his teenage years within its' cities. He completed his undergraduate studies at Calvin College, but finished PhD in 1991 at University of Michigan, while working on multiprocessors and timing analysis tools. Afterwards, he applied for a job in Stanford University in USA, and has worked there ever since.

Olukotun set up a company known as Afara in 2000. Two years later, that same firm was acquired by Sun Microsystems, an American company producing computers, computer components, software, and information technology services, which later got famous for creating the Java programming language, Solaris. The deal that saw Afara (Kunle's firm) becoming part of Sun, was concluded for a little less than $100M US dollars. A few years later, that same company built by Kunle, and acquired by Sun Microsystems generated business worth over $1Billion USD in a year, for Sun. Sun Microsystems itself, was eventually acquired by Oracle Corporation in 2010 in a deal worth US$7.4 billion.

Kunle still remains in the academic world, chasing after new ideas, new projects & new inventions. His core passion is in programming, and he is working really hard to discover how to program MC chips. Today, Kunle Olukotun offers consultancy services to I.T companies, governments, multinationals - virtually anyone who needs his services at about $100,000 USD per session. http://blog.ngarua.com/2008/07/niagara-1-looking-back-interview-with-kunle-olukotun/

Kunle Olukotun is the Cadence Design Systems Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford University and he has been on the faculty since 1991. Olukotun is well known for leading the Stanford Hydra research project which developed one of the first chip multiprocessors with support for thread-level speculation (TLS).

Olukotun founded Afara Websystems to develop high-throughput, low power server systems with chip multiprocessor technology.

Afara was acquired by Sun Microsystems; the Afara microprocessor technology, called Niagara, is at the center of Sun's throughput computing initiative. Niagara based systems have become one of Sun's fastest ramping products ever. Olukotun is an ACM Fellow (2006) for contributions to multiprocessors on a chip and multi threaded processor design. Olukotun received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from The University of Michigan. http://arsenalfc.stanford.edu/kunle

I am shocked by some of what I read in here. I know a lot of Yoruba investments around the globe and here at home but not this deep. This one is a surprise gaan ni papa!

OP God bless you! God bless all those that contributed inputs.

Collect contributions from Baba Ijebu, Okoya, Doyin, Adenuga, Tejuosho, , ... put their contributions together and Yoruba will purchase all of Iboland.

We never add Obasanjo money o, we never add Fernandez, or Alakija, Otedola, Adenuga, Kase Lawal, Kola Karim, Jimoh Ibrahim.

Kase Lawal ranks number 2 on Top Ten Black owned companies in US.

The floor at World Economic Forum in Davos is typically given to Govt and world bodies for their representatives to make presentations. Its not a place for private investors to deliver speech. Kola Karim was given the floor in Davos to speak to world leaders. The Vatican is not your Church, if you want to worship Jesus go to your neighborhood Church and kneel down....but the Pope gave the floor to IFA Priest Prof Wande Abimbola to pray for the Universe. America does not glorify KINGS and Royalty, they fought a war to remove their sovereingty and separate from the Crowwn....but to Ooni of IFE Philadelphia shut down and even facilitated his access to perform a ritual to Olokun and Sango in the City.

How many we want talk? We might live under rusted roof but we rule the World! Yoruba ti re ko ja!!

Yorubas are the movers and shakers of Nollywood

Amazing! Nigerian Movies Gross over N1 billion in 2016

Here’s how 2016’s Top 10 Chart looks like for Nigeria – Please note that not all the figures are verified rather we have used Filmhouse Cinema’s weighted average market share to come up with box office estimates for films not released by FilmOne.

The Wedding Party – FilmOne Nollywood – Over N500 million - Yoruba Producer
A Trip to Jamaica – FilmOne Nollywood – N178.5 million - Yoruba Producer

Batman Vs Superman – Warner/Crimson – N140 million (Estimated)
Captain America – Marvel/Disney/Crimson – N119 million (Estimated)
Suicide Squad – Warner/Crimson – N116 million (Estimated)
London Has Fallen – Independent/Okhma – N90 million (Estimated)
Doctor Strange – Marvel/Disney/Crimson – N85 million (Estimated)
Gods of Eqypt – Independent/Okhma – N80 million (Estimated)
Mechanic Ressurection – Independent/Okhma – N75 million (Estimated)
76 – Silverbird Nollywood – N72 million (Estimated)

From AY Makun‘s “30 Days in Atlanta”, Ebonylife‘s “Fifty”, Omoni Oboli‘s “Wives on Strike” to Kunle Afolayan‘s “The CEO”, and now “A Trip to Jamaica”, “The Wedding Party”, “93 Days”, “76” and many more, it is clear that the Nigerian movie industry has the potential to rake in billions of dollars in revenue.

The Wedding Party, Nigeria’s latest blockbuster movie, has broken box-office records at every milestone since it was released nationwide on December 16 2016. It took just two weeks to eclipse the record of N178 million, held by ‘A Trip to Jamaica’, emerging with a staggering N200 million before the New Year weekend was over. Both films led a strong lineup of popular Nigerian films in 2016, including ‘Wives on Strike’, ‘The CEO’, ‘93 Days’ and ‘76’.

The Wedding Party debuted with the biggest opening weekend in Nollywood history with N36 million; the best-ever opening week with N66 million; the biggest week ever with N110 million; and a jaw-dropping Christmas box-office total of N146 million.

Bros!! Well done! cheesy but you are using old figures to calculate how much 'The Wedding Party' has made till date.

As at January 2017, it had made a little above =N=200 million, but by end of February 2017, it had recorded ticket sales of over =N=400 million. It has just been launched on DVD. By the time you calculate what that film has made from February till date, you would discover the Wedding Party has made well over =N=500 million naira. undecided

The Wedding Party’ rakes in over N400m in ticket sales ~ The Guardian Newspapers ~ 2nd February 2017

Nigeria’s widely acclaimed film The Wedding Party has doubled the previous record of the most tickets sold by a Nigerian movie and keeps going, netting over N400m at the box office.

In December 2016, the Nollywood box-office record stood at N178.5 million and looked likely to remain for some time, especially in the midst of the current recession. However, when the ELFIKE Collective released its romantic comedy, The Wedding Party, on 16th December, the film racked up N203 million in just two weeks, to top the Nigerian box office for 2016 and become the highest-grossing Nollywood film in history. https://guardian.ng/art/the-wedding-party-rakes-in-over-n400m-in-ticket-sales/
