Yar’ Adua: Nigeria mocked in South Africa By Agency Reporter, Published: Wednesday, 3 Feb 2010 click to expand image President Umaru Yar‘Adua The refusal of President Umaru Yar’Adua to write the National Assembly and consequently hand over power to Vice President Goodluck Jonathan since going for foreign medical check up on November 2009 has turned Nigeria into a laughing stock at the international fora, one of which is the ongoing Mining Indaba Conference holding in Cape Town, South Africa. One of the speakers at the first day conference, Dr. David Hale made a remark that President Yar’ Adua was very ill and would die within six months and this elicited loud laughter from the audience. Yar’ Adua has been at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia since November 23, 2009 where he is receiving treatment for acute pericarditis, an inflammation of the outer membrane of the heart. Delivering the keynote address on the Global Outlook, Hale, who is the chairman of David Hale Global Economics, also said Nigeria would be preparing to hold new elections in six months after the expected death of Mr. President. Hale who was making country by country analysis, further claimed that Nigeria power generation capacity was only 2000 mega watts whereas the need was 20,000MW, adding that the shortage of electricity made the country a difficult environment to invest in. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art2010020316594265 |
