We all have heard about intestinal worms, and the most common medicines used to deworm--mebendazole and albendazole. In fact, the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) estimates that globally, 1.5bn people have roundworms, making it the third most common human infection in the world.

Worms are parasites that inhabit several places including the human body.

They include hook, pin, round, and tape worms.

People get infected by worms if they eat undercooked meat or dairy products, raw salads and eggs, or if they get in contact with infected animals such as cats.

According to Unicef, worm infestations may impact on a child’s ability to learn and that growth rate and weight gain among children who are regularly dewormed is higher compared to those who are not.
Worm infestations can present with diarrhoea, loss of appetite, and abdominal cramps.
It is recommended that deworming with albendazole, especially among children should be done every six months.
For pin worm, hygiene is the more recommended option to deal with the problem.

Albendazole is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding mothers. Mebendazole on the other hand, is administered as a 100miligramme tablet. The dosage however depends on the type of worm being treated.

A second course of treatment for both of these drugs should be given only to patients who are still infected three or four weeks after the first course of medication. The efficacy of mebendazole depends on the duration of physical contact between the drug and parasite. When gastro-intestinal transit time is accelerated, for instance among people with diarrhoea, it is recommended that the dose is repeated at more frequent intervals every day.
