Why We Failed To Meet 6000mw – Minister

Minister of Power, Dr Lanre Babalola, has said that the major reason why the ministry did not make the required deadline of 6,000mw was largely due to the constraints of gas supply. He said that poor quality of gas, inadequate volume of gas and the vandalisation of pipelines all contributed to the inability of government to meet the deadline of December 2009.

Dr. Babalola, who was speaking at the ministerial press briefing of the ministry at the auditorium at the Presidential Villa yesterday, said that project delivery slip dates, infrastructure  inadequacy, funding and operational issues were some other contributing factors.

He said that project slip date was directly responsible for government's failure, in that the Chevron Phase 1 Pipeline, one of the major pipelines that was supposed to convey enough gas to aid distribution of 7,00mw, had been vandalized and left idle for over a year, and that the expected 6,000mw had been based on the assumption that the pipeline would be completed before the end of the year, but the delivery date of the project had slipped to February this year.

The minister also stressed that his approach to reforms in the ministry was to decentralise the approach to power through the of new small and medium hydro-electric power projects, HEPPs.

The chairman of the event, Prof. Dora Akunyili, the minister for the transparency in the session, saying this was in line with the on going rebranding campaign currently going on in the country. She also advised the minister to look closely into private sector participation as it is very important.

This man is still talking because even in his failure he still keeps his job.

Which I doubt could happen in another world but Nigeria.

There is no excuse at all for Nigeria not to be able to deliver on only 6000mw, there are too many technology to make it happen, and we have the money to do it, so if i were the guy, i would just keep mute.
Re: Why We Failed To Meet 6000mw – Minister by liftedone(f): 6:23pm On Feb 05, 2010

Why didn't the minister address the gas supply issue then ? It is an open secret that gas supply
to the power stations is a major stumbling block in power generation in Nigeria.

He had the entire 2009 to address it - so what is his excuse ?

I know that the man has an enormous task at hand, but for him to blame the govt's
inability to attain 6,000 MW on lack of gas is pitiful because this is an open secret
and the man had the entire 2009 to address this.

Hi,

I read something like this somewhere:

Is it not a shame on us that Dubai city alone, with a population of 1.19 million people, generates 16,000MW? Poor ‘Yar Adua proudly said to Nigerians that he is ready to provide 6,000MW for the entire nation of 140 million people.

South Africa currently generates more than 40, 000 MW of electricity- a country that got independence in 1994 exactly 34 years after Nigeria became a nation-state. Toyota Motors Company in Japan alone generates more than 36,000MW of electricity from its own private generating plants. Singapore, a city of only 4.8 million people, generates 68,000MW. U.S.A with less than double our population generates 3.2 million MW. But we are still talking of nonsense 6,000MW.

If that is really true Nigeria is on it way of becoming a fail nation.

If it's in another country the minister would have "sacked" himself. . .

Well, that is were we have let ourslevs down time after time. We are very good and swallowing crap and enjoying it. Time to start taking those in government to task. If he doesnt do his job well get rid of him. what is the point of such a monumental failure only to make stupid excuses. The country has been in the dark for far too long
Re: Why We Failed To Meet 6000mw – Minister by Pifa: 4:42am On Feb 07, 2010
It’s not exactly rocket science to make it difficult to vandalize pipelines. It may be costly, but the cost to the country in terms lost productivity, arrested development and health issues resulting from personal-generator pollution can be many times more.

Adopting a security-fence technology known as “closed-loop, live-earth system” to wrap around the pipelines, and burying the pipelines deep underground are effective ways to make life difficult for vandals. Enclosing the pipelines in clam-shell type concrete pipes will add a redundant layer of security. The “closed-loop, live-earth system” technology can map the entire length of the pipeline in discrete sections. If the security of a section is breached, an alarm is sent to the pipeline security office, which can quickly dispatch armed personnel to the area. The protection inherent in this approach is that vandals have to spend hours digging through soil, reinforced concrete and electrified security enclosure to get to the pipeline. Throw in security cameras, off-limit perimeters along the pipeline, and constant patrol; you can achieve near-impenetrable security around the pipeline.

The problem with Nigeria is not lack of money. The problem with Nigeria today is the culture of apathy and lack of accountability and dedication. The minister of power should know how to keep the pipelines safe from vandals. That’s his job. But since no one would hold him accountable, he has found it convenient to sidestep responsibility and blame his failure on vandals.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN OPTIMISTIC ABOUT NIGERIA AND HER PLIGHT, BUT THIS IS ONE PROJECT THAT I REALLY BELIEVED IN UNTIL WE WERE SLAPPED WITH THE NEWS THAT THE TARGET WAS NOT REALISABLE. WHEN IS NIGERIA GOING TO START MAKING HER CITIZENS BELIEVE IN HER AGAIN?

^^^Stick to optimism.
Re: Why We Failed To Meet 6000mw – Minister by astar2008(m): 4:25pm On Feb 08, 2010
In my opinion it was quite obvious when announced that the 6000MW capacity could not be achieved, what baffles me is once this became obvious to him why he did not just come out and say it won't be achieved, instead of leading everbody on, in my opinion this undermines his integrity.

Our honorable minister next time try and be more transparent instead of trying to fool Nigerians, the sad thing is it might not even be possible to achieve the 6000MW by the end of 2010 at this rate.
Honorable minister please prove me wrong.
