SUPOL:English is rapidly taking it over. The adults hardly speak without injecting English words. While most of the younger ones don't even speak it at all. Something must be done to stop this ugly trend. They're not the only victims of this negligence. Almost all the ethnic groups are affected. 4 Likes |

See educated illiterates celebrating the demise of some languages. The beauty of any place is it's culture and language. Nigeria is truly full of illiterates who think they educated. Chai, It can't be well for Naija at this rate It can never be well with this crop of youths. The past have failed the present and the present are gearing up to dumben the future. No desire to learn, no desire to do personal research they expect people to provide proof of points, they see a variant in nature they scream superstitious beliefs, they say God is great at a video of a woman gave birth to live snake. They replaced common sense with Daddy GO/Alfa/Imam. Shame indeed it is a shame. |

@GoodMuyis This is very scary! Most of the non-housa languages in the north will go extinct withing the next 100 years. The reason is that they have so many small ethnic groups that the probability of a Tangale man marrying a woman from Tangale is low. Hausa is a common language, so when a Berom man marries a Gbagi woman, they speak Hausa to themselves and their children. The children grow up neither speaking Gwari nor Berom. For the Ibos , Ijaws & Yorubas, their children speak English when playing with each other. The vocabularies are dying instead of growing. The painful thin is that in some families, their children's first language is English (with heavy Nigerian Accent). Neither Briton nor Yoruba SMH. Our so called elders are also myopic as there is no deliberate action to enlarge the language. For instance, what is the local word for Car Steering Head Light Microscope Rocket Fluorescent Light Amoeba Virus Plasmodium Water Vapour Antenna Wire Cable. etc etc Not to talk of disappearing words For the Yorubas: Eree (Beans) Na'ro (Stand Up) etc 4 Likes |

Apoi language been spoken by certain group of people living somewhere between ijaw and ikale people of Ondo State. They have population close to about 150,000 but in the quest to be politically relevant, they have since the late eighteens adopted ikale language. 2 Likes |

What happened or is happening in the north is very similar to what happened in what is today known as Sudan. In Sudan's case, with the entrance of the Arab-speaking tribes into the region,Arabic gradually replaced other languages in the region to the extent that Arabic has become the official language of Sudan. The region called Darfur, for instance, which was the home of the Fur-speaking people has become almost totally arabized to the extent that many of the tribes there have lost their original tongues. The dominant tongue effect is what I call it. More languages to go soon. 3 Likes |

SUPOL: You are right. So many Igbos leave outside SE region and are good at adopting the language/ traditions of that area. I see people on this forum saying "it's not possible for igbo to be extinct". How many of them can read igbo Bible? How many of them select igbo IVR (igbo option when speaking to customer care of Banks, Telecom's, sales platforms like Julia etc)? How many igbos, working as customer care agents can confidently converse with a customer in igbo? Meanwhile, same person will speak with an hausa or Yoruba customer in their language. How many igbo living in where ever location esp outside SE region understand igbo proverbs or knows at least 10 proverbs? How many igbos can correctly translate an English statement to igbo? Those who lost their language probably didn't see it coming. Igbo must watch it. 5 Likes |

Muzanga: A good number of those kids in igboland now are likely to migrate to other parts in adulthood, the question is will they transmit the language when raising their children there? I speak igbo fluently despite being born and raised in Lagos because my parents made deliberate effort towards it. I got to work for some years in rural communities in Enugu and Anambra , I did see how disconnected a lot of kids who were brought home for the Christmas and New Year celebrations were. Why should grandparents struggle to communicate with their children? 2 Likes |
