Zebra crossing as been a familiar name to almost everybody in Nigeria but not all have more knowledge about it. Road users are majorly motorists and pedestrians but pedestrians are majorly victims of road accidents on our roads both on our primary and secondary roads.

What is zebra crossing
Zebra crossing is a longitudinal stripes on the road, parallel to the flow of traffic, alternatively a light colour and a dark one. The stripes are typically 40 to 60 centimeters (16 inches to 2 feet) in wide.
Pedestrian crossing was first introduced by Leslie Hore- Belisha the then United Kingdom minister of transport in 1934. The minister was highly concerned about the way the pedestrians get involved in road accidents even while crossing on the road. Leslie designed pedestrian crossing with beacons and parallel row of studs. Although it was long forgotten until 1949 when it was put to test at 1000 sites in the United kingdom with blue and yellow stripes. In 1959, zebra crossing measures was introduced to law (the highway code of the United Kingdom) and in 1971, the green code was introduced to teach children safer crossing habit to replace the earlier kerbs and drills.

Zebra crossing give pedestrians the permanent right of way if accompany by belisha beacon or coditional right of way if accompany by traffic light. Pedestrians have right or priority only when when the light shows green to them.
Scholar made it known that frequency of giving way at zebra crossing was 5% because drivers typically do not observe the speed law behaviour at zebra crossing.
In the United Kingdom, it is a rule that motorists give way to pedestrians while at zebra crossing (Rule 195 of the highway code) introduced in the late 1940s and 50s to tackle high death rate of pedestrians crossing road.
The rule state that if a driver disobey the zebra crossing law, the driver will pay a fine of 100 pound. Recently, the rule have changed any driver that disobey the rule will pay 1000 pound and lose his or her drivers license.

Design of zebra crossing
As we all know that zebra crossing is a longitudinal stripes, parallel to the flow of traffic. It is always black and white stripe on the road typically 40 to 60 centimeters on the road. before getting to the zebra crossing, the must be a traffic light 10 meters away and also an enforcement camera must be there to indicate the offenders at night or when traffic wardens are not at the spot.

Nigerian zebra crossing
In Nigeria, zebra crossing are designed for the fun of it 95% of our roads do not have zebra crossing design. The ones that has this design are not properly constructed, maintained and monitored they lack the proper design method of zebra design mentioned above. If we can design a modern day zebra crossing with the application of traffic light and enforcement camera and proper monitoring by traffic warders, the death rate of pedestrians will be reduced in the country. Also proper orientation must be conducted by the government in order for our road users to know the benefits of zebra crossing. Also, the citizens and the road users must also train and retrain themselves on how to use zebra crossing and zebra crossing measure must be introduce to our law and make sure the enforcement of the law is in right order. With this, death rate of pedestrians will be reduced.
