The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), says it has commenced the training of 450 “carefully selected” regiment personnel as Special Forces.

NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya, who disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja, explained that the training would be conducted in three batches.
“Training for the first batch, comprising 150 personnel, took off this weekend at the NAF Regiment Training Centre in Kaduna,” he said.

Adesanya said that the training was being handled by ‘FOUR-TROOP’, a reputable foreign military training organisation from Israel.
He said that the training would develop the capacity of the personnel to fight under all types of terrains and weather conditions.
“At the end of the nine-week training, successful participants will be deployed to defend NAF air assets and bases, as well as critical national infrastructure and assets.
“The Special Forces will also be required to take the battle to the adversaries, whenever necessary,” he said.
Adesanya quoted AVM Samson Akpasa, the Air Officer Commanding, Ground Training Command, who inaugurated the training exercise, as saying that the exercise became necessary to ensure a robust counter-force to respond to insurgencies.
He further quoted Akpasa as saying that the counter force had become necessary in view of threats to security by insurgents, militants, oil thieves, cattle rustlers and kidnappers.
“As conflicts become more complex and diverse, a force multiplier unit such as the Special Forces will enable us gain an upper hand in tactical battles,” the official also noted.
The statement quoted Akpasa as thanking the foreign partners, especially the ‘FOUR TROOP” company, for accepting to conduct the training in Nigeria.
It also quoted Group Captain Isaac Subi, Commandant of NAF Regiment Training Centre, who also spoke at the ceremony, as saying that NAF Regiment Specialty was a blend of the Army Infantry and Artillery Corps.
Subi also described the Special Forces as an invaluable adjunct to conventional forces capable of sophisticated, specialised and measured response in complex air-ground environments covering both land and sea areas.

Look at the Colonial Army making noise when they don't even have a commander in chief, and once again have to spend millions on help from Oyibo people to train them.

What war are they about to fight? None of course, just to make sure that their owners in the Western World get the resources without any much gra gra...

just 9 weeks and they are making mouth? I thought they are even creating a new special force unit like SEALS in the US navy.
I hope they won't go and shoot civilian homestead again, mistaking it for terrorist base after the'specialized' training

It's a commendable move that other nations have since embraced. Each branch of armed forces should have a certain degree of self sufficiency in combat matters. A shining example is the united states armed forces. The army has its own air corps, the navy has the marine corps, which is an amphibious mini branch, the SEALs for special operations & air units that fly both fixed & rotary winged aircrafts. However, the publicity is what i frown at. Special operations isn't something you go about announcing. Training should be conducted as covertly as combat ops are. The only people entitled to know are the necessary participants, organizers trainers. Even the trainees should only be alerted when they report. Also, the training emphasis should have included the ability of the successful participants to retrain others. We can't keep calling foreign mercenaries to train our military. It's not only shameful but dangerous.

You are very right. The US Army maintains its own helicopters, few transport planes and even amphibious landing crafts. The US Navy too has its own air wing that fly fighter jets and a partially independent Army (the Marines), which also has its own fighter jets and helicopters. All military units and even the CIA fly reconnaissance airplanes and drones. This gives them self sufficiency and they do not always have to wait for other arms to the military to cover their behinds.

The Nigerian military also needs to know when to talk and when to keep quiet. This sort of information should not be divulged, at least, not at this time because BH and other criminal elements could attack them during training.

The Nigerian Air Force flies attack jets and helicopters even though the profile of the jets are not really impressive.

However, even if they have high-end jets, they will still need high-end personnel to defend their bases. NAF Regiment was formed after Boko Haram attacked NAF base in Maiduguri sometimes in 2013/2014 when they destroyed some aircrafts on the ground.

Today, I don't know if the Army still has men in Air Force bases in the north but I know that members of the Armed Forces Special Forces (AFSF), a tri-service unit made men and officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force are present in Air Force bases in the north.

Or do you expect the Air Force to depend on the Army to protect their air assets. They have to do it themselves.

You should know that in warfare, the infantry forms the backbone of every military unit, which is why all military personnel are trained in infantry tactics. Cameroon and Chad for instance, do not have armored tanks but they have the infantry. Please, let's appreciate the men and officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces. Warfare is no joke. If we do not appreciate them, who will?
