Google was founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Ph.D. students at Stanford University. Google was formally called Backrub because the system checked backlinks to estimate the importance of a site. At that time search engines ranked pages based on how many times search items appeared on the page, which wasn’t good. They theorized a better way to rank pages based on number of pages and importance of those pages that linked to the original site. Due to the little experience with HTML (language for designing webpages) the site was far away from being catchy.

But that didn’t stop them.

The domain name for Google was later registered in 1997 and incorporated in September 1998.At some time in 1999, Google founders Brin and Page decided to sell Google to Excite. Excite CEO rejected the $1million offer even when they slashed the price to $750,000.
