Jonathan Presidency: Niger Delta youths declare support for Akunyili[/size]

Youths of Niger Delta region, under the eagis of Niger Delta Youth Movement on Sunday, threw their weight behind the Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili, over what they described as her sincere stand on the state of the nation.

President of the group, Mr. Ajulisan Akumagba, disclosed the position of youths of the region on the matter while addressing newsmen in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Professor Akunyili had at last week’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting called on President Umaru Yar’Adua to respect the constitution and transmit power to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan because of his ill-health, which had taken the president out of the country for 79 days now.

According to Akuma-gba, Professor Akunyili had demonstrated a sense of respect and love for the Nigerian Constitution and deserves commendations for her bold step, instead of blackmail.

“Those who are asking for the head of Akunyili are anti-democratic elements and enemies of Nigeria. That woman is a special gift to this country. What has she done to deserve crucifixion? She has only called for respect for the laws of the land.

“The constitution is straight on the issue at stake. Even a mad man knows that in the absence of the head, the vice takes over. Why are they bringing ethnicity and clannishness into it? If they do not want a Niger Delta president, then they should stop drilling Niger Delta oil.

“We have had enough of this. Let me tell you, if any further attempt is made to vilify her on this issue, we shall come out of our shell and they will see what the reaction of an angry and marginalised region can be.

We use this opportunity to let her know that Niger Delta youths are solidly behind her and shall rise up to the challenge of defending her and few other sincere persons in government. She must resist every attempt to make her resign,” the youth leader said.
