ACTING President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday night met with leaders of Niger Delta under the aegis of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) at the State House, Abuja.

The meeting came at the heels of the November ultimatum given to the Federal Government to open dialogue with the group on its 16-point demand or it would withdraw from negotiations.
National Leader/Convener of PANDEF, Chief Edwin Clark, had told a news conference last Monday that though Osinbajo had given a firm commitment after his visit to the region, government had failed to take steps towards their implementation, thereby putting Niger Delta leaders under pressure from their people.
The Presidency had last week maintained that government would flag-off the first set of Modular Refineries in Delta region, this month as well as begin the clean up of Ogoniland, two components contained in the demands by PANDEF.
Among those at the meeting were Amayanabo of Brass, Alfred Diete-Spiff; Victor Attah, Don Etiebet, Timi Alaibe, Senator Bassey Ewa-Henshaw, Tony Uranta, Hosa Ogunbor and Godknows Igali.

The government can keep on greasing palms after palms just to placate these people, the blackmail will NEVER stop as long as we have no other major means of sustenance.

I remember an article Bruce wrote sometime ago about the "dictatorship of the minority" (something like that) where he opined that "unless Nigeria finds oil in as much quantity elsewhere in the country as there is in the Niger Delta, the region would continue to hold the country to ransom". There, he made a case for the propriety of oil exploration in the Chad basin and other such places far flung from the ND.

He talked about the abhorrence of nature to the concept of singularity and how such situations, wherever they exist, breed nothing but trouble and alot other undesirable stuffs. Reason why in nature we must always have opposites like man and woman, forest and grassland, desert and ocean, day and night, black and white, rich and poor, etc.

As long as this situation of singularity/monopoly as regards our means of income as per location and commodity persists, this cycle of blackmail and intimidation in return for quick cash both from the elders and youths of the region will continue to be our lot.

I think it's no fault of the elders in the region, it is the fault of the govt that chooses to bribe instead of aggressive development in the region
