Nigeria is not worth sacrificing for. If those ruling us are not willing tonsacrifice their bogus salaries to free up resources to invest in our infrastructure then d sacrifice of just one person wud be so little to make any meaningful impact.
If u ve spoken with Nigerian professionals in d diaspora who really desire to make their contribution and how the govt wud frustrate d meaningful effort of such ones then u wud not be saying what u said.
The system is so rotten that it forbids progressive effort to make a positive change.
Nigeria is doomed.

I salute your patrotisim but there is a limit on how far you can go in Nigeria. The system just doesn't work. There is problem whichever direction you look and sometimes it appears there is no hope of things getting better. You have only one life to live.
Thank you for your very decent reply. But a sacrifice you want to benefit from is no sacrifice. What about making those sacrifices for your children. If you don't reap your sacrifice in this life, your kids will. There is always hope.

I dont blame them....why wont they seek for opportunities outside this country when they are under valued. How many hospitals do we have? how much is a medical doctor paid here? are we even ready to revamp our health sector?
We have the best brains in medical practice..we train them with little or nothing yet these young men and women will be thrown out and no jobs for them.

The older doctors and consultants are not even ready and willing to allow these young men and women practice well and and learn.
Our government is not even looking in the area of health to make it work.
Go to our hospitals and see how rotten it look and is run...\

I have a couple of friends who are doctors,,they all have left the shores of this country to work in mainly the middle east and European countries...they are earning well, working in a structured environment and ready to commit their times for their service and reward.

WHAT SORT OF SACRIFICE DO YOU WANT A DOCTOR TO MAKE? IS IT WHERE THERE IS NO FUNCTIONAL HEALTH FACILITY? WHERE A GENERAL HOSPITAL REFERS A PATIENT TO RUN A SCAN OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL? WHERE DRUGS ARE NEVER AVAILABLE IN THE HOSPITAL? WHERE DOCTORS RUN SEVERAL SHIFTS AND ARE OWED? WHERE NOTHING IS ACTUALLY WORKING?....ISNT IT ENOUGH SACRIFICE..ABII LET HIM DIE FOR YOU undecided undecided undecided undecided
Every heath worker is underrated in Nigeria..

Every day hospitals in Dubai and Saudi Arabia comes to Nigeria to pick our best doctors....currently many young doctors i know are seriously saving up funds to apply for visa to leave the country.
Even after spending over 8 years in school ..many of them dont mind enrolling afresh in a foreign country...you think that is funny?

Yet the government is so insensitive and blind...assuming we are doing well.No wonder our president is comfortably sitting in a foreign hospital.

Shame cry cry

The govt is not to blame but the people who'll prefer to bash their indigenous docs and make the govt to further believe we're useless and thus further worsen our life.

Yes it is good if you can stay to change things. Nigeria is our own and no one can do except we the citizens. I was thinking like you before I travelled abroad about 17 years ago after watching Nigeria for many years. I can see things are always getting worse and worse for that country and yet up till now, the trend is still the same. I don't know why may be it is the blend of the kind of people making up the country or I don't know why. All I can say is that I thank God for taking that decision. I enjoy the country anytime I visit now because I don't reside there.

While such issues should inspire us as Nigerians to strive for better Nigeria, let us also bear in mind that they're not exclusive to us. For example, many NHS Doctors and Nurses would like to work abroad too. Many do indeed emigrate to work in America, Australia, Canada and New Zealand once newly qualified. Britain is currently considering prohibitive measures such as committing undergraduates to contracts, which stipulates that they most work for a number of years in Britain before being at liberty to leave the country to work abroad.

please excuse the clunky grammar.

Doctors here make on average about $200k-&300k a year.
Sometimes more.
With the current exchange rate a doctor making the minimum, will make $200k * 350 = 70 million a year. Which gives almost 6 million naira salary every month.

Nurses and many other professional health workers here make more than doctors there. Tell your Nigerian government to step up.

ceaser:
Over the past 6 months, twelve (12) doctor friends have escaped for their lives into countries such as UK, SA, Australia, Canada, US, Germany, in that descending order. 9 of them are practicing doctors in their various destinations having written and passed the professional exam requirements of the various countries before leaving Nigeria. Others are there on postgraduate studies, but their target is to write their licencing exams and end up practicing medicine there.

My sibling is currently on the second step of the licencing exam. Close to 500 medical doctors sat for the IELTS earlier this year compared to just 30 four years ago.

Meanwhile, the useless health minister is currently brewing more problems in the health ministry and the agencies under it viz:

NHIS: Attempting to sack the NHIS executive secretary because he would not meet Adéwolé's unscrupulous financial demands and looting of the NHIS in connivance with the insurance providers.

:In the various Teaching Hospitals and other federal tertiary health institutions, there is dearth of doctors. In some, new house officers have not been employed to replace the ones that have left for over six months. Meanwhile there are hordes of fresh medical graduates who have been searching for places to do their internship as required by the MDCN, without which they cannot proceed to full registration from the provisional registration they currently have. If they fail to do internship within 2 years of graduation, they risk forfeiting their provisional registration status, needing them to resit the medical qualification exams all over again.

The so called residents exit the system when they complete their training. New residents are not employed to replace those that have exited the system leading to a pile up of aspiring ones with primaries qualification out there not getting places to run their programme. Meanwhile the primaries requirement for residency expires within 5 years if the bearer does not find a place to run his programme, also requiring his reapplying for and re-writing the primaries exams (which I think costs about 90 thousand naira currently)

Now here is the plot: The names of the house officers and the residents that have exited the system are still kept on the payroll of the hospitals and the salaries still come with the hospitals' allocations, but these ghost workers' pays are shared by the hospitals' accountants, MDs/CMDs/CEOs and also staffs of the federal ministry of health under the tutelage of the minister himself. Meanwhile the consultants who exit the system after training also are in their hundreds hunting for jobs out there.

Another favorite pastime of the Minister of health and the hospital CEOs as I am made to understand is to deliberately keep creating and fueling chaos in health sector amongst professionals (eg Johesu vs Doctors). This is based on the principle of "making more money in times of chaos and wars" and this is achieved through the release of various contradicting circulars from the ministry itself on a simple singular, straightforward issue.

Equipment's and infrastructure are all at an all time low. Only 3 centers in the whole nation boasts of a radiotherapy machine, the three not functioning optimally all at the same time or at any one time. If the Federal government ever budget and release the monies for such, the FMoH and the various hospital CEOs will rather spend the money allocated to procure such or at best get mediocres and second nd replacements and share the remains of the loots.

These are just a few of the evils that plague that sector in the country and is partly responsible or the unremitting brain drain.

It is germain that journalists an writers who are the conscience of the people (masses) understand the workings of this intricate machinery constructed by the various saboteurs in the health sector thru which they loot funds, inform the public appropriately amd even some workers in the health sector as well, who have been successfully brainwashed into believing that mutual suspicion is the panacea and acting out the script of their puppet masters (FMoH and the hospital CEOs) ia the solution.

Ceaser writes in from Lagos for Nairaland editorial.
Hmm! You've seen it all.A major newspaper should quickly make this an editorial.Weldone sir!!!

Doctors will continue to leave as long as we train them mostly for foreign and exotic diseases. But mostly ignorant of local parasitic and infectious diseases.

Except children of Babalawo in medical schools.

If Nigerians only know how much praises and respect foreign medical scientists gave Nigeria generally and Lagos in particular when we defeated Ebola. Note, that was old fashioned primary healthcare instituted by the likes of Olikoye Kuti

Well, those doctors trained then are dying and retired. Most countries train doctors for their local needs and then specialized doctors that can compete anywhere

Continue training according to foreign medical curriculum and expect them not to jump. Even if you double their pay.

You want international doctors, abi

The corruption stated above is something else, typical of the mess we find ourselves. Doctors are part of the system including referring patients to their clinics or you die!

Sorry dude, I am almost certain that you don't hav your facts concerning the welfare of doctors in this country. How can a doctor be living above average when he is being owed salary arrears?
You might want to argue that a lot of people are being owed too, but when you factor in the fact that doctors work for longer hours in the name of emergencies, call duties, leaving them with little or no time to pursue other money making ventures, you may be inclined to agree with me that it is CRIMINAL to owe a doctor!
There are many points I would hav raised but let me leave others who truly understand the plight of the Nigerian doctor, beyond the facade of an compulsory ethical smile, to allude to more challenges they face.

It is not only doctors that are leaving. Nurses, pharmacists and physiotherapists are leaving in droves. In all this, it is Nigeria and Nigerians that are losing after spending so much to train these professionals. One big irony is that the countries they are migrating to even have higher doctors to people ratio. U.K, USA, Australia etc keep recruiting and willing to get better. Whereas our own health system is several decades behind theirs, they keep improving. We've always exported the little we have while we keep importing what we have.

The issues also go beyond job satisfaction. Or how do you explain a specialist brain surgeon in Nigeria not minding to go start all over again in U.K? This country needs help, and urgently too. There seems to be no one in charge, no sense of direction, the future is ever so uncertain. The land is filled with hatred and division.

Government should put measures in place to halt the brain-drain not just among doctors but all categories of professionals.

First remove and replace your stupid, incompetent and clueless old leaders at Aso Rock and replace them with someone who has some b rain and vision.
Then remove those lazy over-paid idiots who are chopping our money and claiming millions of dollars in undeserved benefits in our senate in Abuja.
And then sack those coconut-head, brainless governors of yours that you have in all your various states. This will save us billions of dollars.
Replace them with some young, forward-thinking, non-corrupt and dedicated progressive young Nigerian men and women. Trim the wasteful budget. Just look at Tanzania. Even look at Kenya and compare how much they get paid in the Kenyan Parliament to over-paid Nigerian Senate.
Once you cut all this ignorant waste, you can then use that money to create jobs, health care and education for average Nigerians, and build up the infrastructure. The day that Nigeria's electricity power failure problem is solved or fixed, that day is the same day that Nigeria will be immediately rescued and the economy will just explode and grow exponentially. If Nigeria's economy is solved, everything else will fall in place - jobs, taxes, growth, development, infrastructure, national wealth, health care, production, manufacturing, etc., etc.
Eliminate the useless PHCN. Just like their nickname, all that they know how to do is to HOLD power from Nigerians. They are truly a "power-holding" corporation. They live up to their name. They hold power from Nigerians.

If you do all this, more Nigerian professionals (including those absconding medical doctors) will stay instead of just looking to jet out overseas at every opportunity. And Nigeria will be a better place to live in.

I see Nigeria as a jungle, when I'm ready and strong enough, I'll leave. I can't bring my child into this part of the world.
That is d issue d lack of modern equipment. I ve studied but in Nigeria and abroad and from my experience modern equipment but in the job and training makes a huge difference.
Nigeria is many centuries behind. If u re trained in Nigeria in sciences, medicine, engineering, technology and u go abroad u wud look like mumu cos d training received in Nigeria with no or dilapidated equipment can never prepare graduates in climes with high level technology. Why are you guys comparing salaries abroad to Nigerian salary?

Does it make sense or the same union or determination board are fixing salaries worldwide?

Do you know how much highly world regarded doctors make in Cuba?

This is why I say no matter what the salary, Nigerian doctors will leave for the countries that fit their medical curriculum. Train Nigerian doctors for Nigeria and the brain drain will stop.

When was the last time you heard that physician assistants (health officers) train in medical tech. all over the country are leaving in droves. But then, even those without post secondary training are leaving.

Our problem is beyond medical doctors alone. The system is junk. Instead of standing up like your fathers did for Independence and demand action, you are waiting for your grandfather Wole Soyinka to come and fight for you. Wait O!

Again, wait o. Somebody is complaining about equipment.

Since Independence, you cannot make your own equipment? Who are you waiting for?

By the way, we have the biggest field for medicine and discovery in Africa, right in your village. Every summer, professors of medicine used to invade Olulunyo Hospital in Ibadan waiting to be posted to Bush Hospital. They then go back home and teach tropical medicine at Harvard, Yale, Oxford, McGill or University of Toronto.

Abeg, which equipment are you complaining about? You do not have iron, tin, silver or gold to make Bunsen burner? Go si-down jor!

Many of you are lazy waiting to be spoon-fed and collect government salaries.

Ah, ah. What about those trained abroad, leave everything and return home. As we usually say in those days, before you kill your mother!

Going by Nigeria's economic-index, a doctor lives above average. I'm a lawyer and I can boldly tell you as a professional that we never enjoyed half of what doctors enjoyed even from service year. No other professional enjoyed what doctors enjoy.
Per-capital income of a doctor dwarfs the pay-cheque of every other professional.

You are wrong. You wrote the Gross salary. After all government deductions how much comes back as net salary? What is the cost of housing and other bills in the US? I believe you know that its way higher than in Nigeria. The money you earn abroad should never be compared to the pay in Nigeria. You don't spend dollars in Nigeria. After all that salary they still live on credit. How much do they save at the end of the day? I know some doctors earning really good in Nigeria. If they want to relocate it should be for other reasons not just money.
Heck! My German national friend who is still a medical doctor rented a flat because the rent was high he had to occupy only one room while renting out the rest rooms including the store room. This is a specialist doctor o.I have met many doctors abroad and they cannot be termed to be rich. They are doing okay and that's it.
