President of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Francis Faduyile, has raised the alarm over shortage of healthcare practitioners in the country, saying only 42,000 doctors are available for Nigeria’s population of over 200 million people.

He said high rate of insecurity, poor job satisfaction, low remuneration, unemployment, bad roads, and poor healthcare system were some of the reasons why Nigerian doctors and other healthcare practitioners were leaving the country for greener pastures abroad.

Speaking with Akelicious yesterday, the NMA president said about 75,000 Nigerian doctors were registered with the body, but over 33,000 have left the country, leaving behind only about 42,000 to man all health institutions in the country.

He said: “In rural areas, we have one doctor to 22,000 people, while in towns and cities, we have one doctor to 10,000 Nigerians or one doctor to 12,000 Nigerians, whereas the World Health Organisation (WHO) said for any country to have a balanced ratio, it must have one doctor to 600 persons.

“Nigerian doctors and other healthcare workers, including nurses and pharmacists, are leaving the country in droves because of the poor healthcare system and lack of job satisfaction.

“The United Kingdom employs, on the average, 12 Nigerian doctors every week. If Nigeria decides to graduate 3,000 doctors every year, without the doctors leaving this country, it will take us 25 years to meet the WHO estimate of one doctor to 600 persons,” he said.

Faduyile said the UK, where most Nigerian doctors were migrating to, has many doctors for her population, whereas reverse was the case in Nigeria.

The president had earlier mentioned during the 10th Annual Symposium of the Health Writers Association of Nigeria (HEWAN) in Lagos recently that there was a huge deficit in the nation’s health sector due to brain drain as some of the best healthcare practitioners were leaving the country through migration to more favourable countries.

The NMA president said: “Nigeria is losing some of its most educated, talented and professional healthcare practitioners to countries such as Namibia, Senegal, Ghana, UK, South Africa and many others.

“This is because the government is not interested in giving adequate priority to health, low funding, no appropriate employment, low remuneration, lack of equipment to intervene and save lives, insecurity, bad roads, among other problems.

“Now, it is taking a toll on the country as our people are suffering due to the shortage of workers, people are dying due to lack of effective healthcare system and Nigeria has one of the worst health indices in the world,” he said.

Is it 42,000 Useful doctors or 42,000 untrained Doctors. Because I understand charge and bail also existing within our medical system. And people have lost their Wives, Mother, Husband, Father, Uncle, Brother, sister, a Friend, as a result of these quacks. Because, one good head I understand is better than 200 sick heads! shocked

Since Buhari started pilotting the flight 1960 Nigeria, people became scared of the destination he is taking us to, people are leaving the country daily, soon babies in their mother's womb will hold on tight to something and won't want to come out, immediately they know they are coming to Nigeria under Buhari government.

With the current brain drain of doctors and other health care personnel , I am surprised the health care is still working. Very soon na only Baba Aisha herbal doctor we go get for 9ja

Imagine one doctor to 10 thousand patients, are we are still complaining that we are not having good services.

We should ask the govt, why they have let d health system die while there go abroad for health checks

In the 60s we were a force to recon with in health care provisions. India and the rest put there health Care in order and we go der for medical tourism. Why can't we do same . its the gain of India, UK and Canada. Its our loss

We have the man power, we only lack government policy

For a country of 203 million people? And several doctors are still leaving the shores of Nigeria for better employment experiences abroad? Government needs to do more!

42000 doctors against 200 millions Nigerians. Mogbe, no wonder they are always aggressive at duty. Let say we are all sick at a time, statiscally, one doctor will be treating 4761 patients. Too bad

More than enough doctors

We have nurses, pharmacist, MLS, chemists, herbalist, native doctor. Not every sick person needs a med doctor

That's not the only problem. Amongst this 42000, a high number of the senoir doctors no longer go to the hospitals, especially teaching hospitals. They leave those student doctors who have no experience to be battling taking care of numerous cases thereby leading to avoidable loss of lives.

Almost half of the registered doctors have left. This is alarming. It shows there's a big problem with Nigeria's economy and planning.

The very reason why the country remains retrogressive. The quality of citizenship is just too low. Either too ignorant or too incompetent. Just can't seem to see the relationship between their actions and experiences.
