Are you experiencing an "unexplained infertility"? Planning to have a baby? Or are you pregnant? Then, this is a must read for you on how you can use a healthy and well-balanced diet to boost or increase your chances of getting and maintaining your pregnancy.

Healthy and well-balanced diets gives the body all the nutrients it needs for a healthy conception and eventual delivery. By taking foods rich in the following nutrients, you can greatly increase your chances of getting and maintaining your pregnancy.

FIBER

Any woman is planning to or who is pregnant should pump up her fiber intake. Taking fiber makes you less likely to develop gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes occurs mostly during pregnancy and it affects 5% of pregnant women

in the US, or around 200,000 women per year according to the National Institute Of Child Health And Human Development (NICHD). It is recommended that women take 28 grams of fiber for every 2000 calories. Eating high quality

carbohydrates such as fruits and vegetables also helps with avoiding gestational diabetes. Fiber can also be sourced from legumes and whole grains.

FOLIC ACID

Folic acid also known as folate is a B vitamin (B9) found in leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, orange juice and whole grains. Taking 400 micrograms ( 0.4milligrams ) daily before or during pregnancy, reduces the risk of your baby being

born with neural tube defect ( a birth defect which involves the incomplete development of the brain and spinal cord ) by 70%. Most birth defects ( the most common being spina bifida ) occurs during the first 28 days of pregnancy- usually

before a woman even knows she is pregnant. This is why it is so important that any woman of child bearing age or who is planning to get pregnant should get enough folic acid as more than 50% of pregnancies are not planned.

Foods that are high in folic acid includes kiwi fruits and papaya, vegetables such as brocolli, brussell sprouts, spinach, cabbage, aspragus and cooked kidney. Be careful not to overcook your vegetables as this may destroy the folic acid.

Other good sources of folic acid includes baked beans, lettuce.oranges, egg yolks, milk and peas.

CALCIUM

Calcium is essential for developing strong bones and teeth and pregnancy is a time for a woman to conceive more calcium. If a woman doesn't get enough calcium from her diet, the body takes it from her bones to give to her baby. The risk

of not having enough calcium is the major cause of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease which causes the bones to become very weak and fragile, curved spine, loss of height and increases the risk of bone fracture in women. Calcium

can be sourced from dairy products like milk, yogurt, cheese, ice cream and from some plant based sources like tofu, black eyed peas, baked beans, oranges and collard greens.

IRON

Iron is essential for the manufacture of red blood cells that carry oxygen around the body and helps maintain a healthy immune system. Poor intake of iron rich foods causes anemia. Foods that are rich in iron are meat, fish, eggs. dried beans and fortified grains. it should be noted that the iron in meat are easily absorbed that iron in vegetables. If you are anemic, increasing the amount of meat you consumed is the

easiest way to increase the iron your body receives. 30 milligrams of iron per day is recommended for aspiring and pregnant women.

ZINC

Marginal deficiencies of zinc in pregnant women can result in spontaneous abortion. Therefore, women need to consider zinc supplements before and during pregnancy as it is needed for the development of the embryo and fetus. It also

helps in the production of about 100 enzymes in the body, builds you a healthy immune system, maintains your senses of smell and taste. More so, it is needed for DNA synthesis.
Foods that are rich in zinc are milk, and cheese, yeast, peanuts, beans, brown rice, whole grain, cereals, potato and yogurt.

UNSATURATED FATS

Fats that are essential part of a healthy diet and and some fats are essential before and during pregnancy because they support your baby's brain and eye development both before and after birth. Monounsaturated fats are considered

"good" fats because they are best at lowering cholesterol. They can be found in olive, canola, peanut oils, avocado, nut butters and safflower. Polyunsaturated fats are beneficial too as they contain omega-3fatty acids (like DHA and ALA,

both of which are vital the healthy development of your baby ) and omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3s are found in flx seed oil, canola oil and cold water fish while omega-6 are found in sunflower, cotton seeds and corn.

WATER

Water helps in flushing out toxins ( toxins build up unfriendly chemical environment in the body system and can be a major factor of unexplained infertility ) from the body which is helpful before and during pregnancy. Water is an essential

part of a healthy diet as it hydrates the body, helps to get rid of unnecessary sodium and prevents Urinary Tract Infections. It equally helps in the flow of nutrients through the blood to the baby during pregnancy. Drinking eight glasses of

water a day helps prevent constipation and hemorrhoids. For women in their early pregnancy, drinking water may help alleviate morning sickness.
