The Minister Of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, says his office through the Abuja to Kaduna rail line, now generates one million Naira, which he donates daily into the coffers of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government.

This might have come as a huge shock to his successor, Governor Nyesom Wike, who has constantly accused the Transportation Minister of corruption, while he held sway as Rivers State Governor.

Amaechi who stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Tuesday, in Benin, revealed that the feat was achieved as a result of the increase in passengers’ patronage.

“We are spending N56 million per month, we are getting back only N16 million. Now there is an improvement; we now make N30 million, (that is) one million Naira per day.

“The improvement started last month, because of increase in passengers, because of the kidnapping on the road”, he said.

The Minister said that the government was using the previously generated revenues on the maintenance of the coaches and other logistics.

Amaechi added that the government would address the issue of touting at the Idu rail station, with the expected arrival of 10 more coaches. by October.

He however, disclosed that the arrival of the new coaches would require more resources for maintenance, in order to meet customers’ expectations.

At this rate, revenue will catch up and eventually overtake expenditure.

Nice improvement there.

not bad...

First, this is poor journalism at it's peak (or shall I say base). Poor usage of tense, incoherent and disjointed article (what is Wike's name doing in there).

Back to the story;

There are 4 economy coaches and 1 first class coach. Each coach has an average of 95 seats. The conomy fare is 1,000 and first class goes for 1,500. The train does 4 trips daily.

If you do the maths that adds up to like a yearly turnover of over 600,000,000 naira (around $2,000,000).

Although the cost of the project is estimated to be $876,000,000, with the addition of 10 coaches that should boost the annual turnover estimates by an additional 1,200,000,000 naira (about $3,500,000), and even more with additional trips.

This is appalling! Imagine spending N56million monthly and then celebrating a revenue of N30million, what sort of nonsense is that?... In otherwords, the Abuja to Kaduna rail is being operated as a huge liability to the govt of Nigeria and someone things this is worthy of celebrations?

I dont need a soothsayer to tell me the rail system will collapse in the near future if things continue like this. The moment it was announced by the Transport minister that train fares along the route would be N900, that was when I concluded the rail system would be a liability. All over the world, the more comfortable, fast and safer speed train services cost more than jumping on the bus; but that's obviously not the case in ours. The train services which should be able to take care of itself and also fetch reasonable revenue from profits to the govt is now being used as a political tool.

Solution: Privatise the operation of these new trains, the FG should completely get its hands off the operation and maintenance of the trains and the railways if we want them to survive up to 5 years.
