[size=14pt]Man charged with obstructing Jonathan’s convoy [/size]

A 40-year-old man, Jude Opara, who allegedly obstructed the convoy of the Acting President Goodluck Jonathan has been charged with a traffic obstruction before a Senior Magistrate’s Court in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria also reported that the police prosecutor, Mr. Mohammed Ahmed, told the court that the accused person had on February 16 driven his Rover saloon car marked BE 195 YAB on Shehu Shagari Way in a reckless manner and obstructed the convoy of the acting president.

Ahmed alleged that the accused had the knowledge that the convoy was that of the acting president, but went ahead to disturb its movement.

He said that Opara committed the offence at about 10.20am on Tuesday while the convoy was approaching Nicon Hilton Junction, Maitama, Abuja.

Ahmed said, “You were arrested by ACP Sunday Odukoya, the Area Commander, Metro, when you obstructed the convoy of the Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, while entering Transcorp Hilton.’’

But when the two-count charge of causing obstruction on the highway and failing to obey hand signal was read to the accused person, he denied liability.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr Alkali Bashir, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with a reliable surety in like sum.

Bashir ruled that the surety, who must reside in the court’s area of jurisdiction, must affix his passport to the bail bond and swear to an affidavit of the court.

The case was adjourned till March 8 for hearing.
