I came across this thread https://www.nairaland.com/4006492/nigeria-ranks-3rd-global-internet while on break at work, as this is my field I was shocked when I saw this headline at first I thought It was from one of these disgruntled opposition mischievous politician who want to paint the government black or from Western media who want to tarnish the image of the country as always! but to my utmost surprise it's from The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC’s Chief Executive Officer,Umar Danbatta and he is quoted to have said that "Nigeria currently ranks third globally in cybercrimes behind the UK and the U.S." - Umar Danbatta 2017 http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/241160-nigeria-ranks-3rd-global-internet-crimes-behind-uk-u-s-ncc.html/amp This is a big shame and it's totally unacceptable as this is a total fallacy and a misinformation!!! Now let me clear the air about where he must have gotten his information from, it's from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and its Internet Crime Complaint Centre which has ranked Nigeria third in the world behind the US and UK. These are complaints made to the FBI, and it's merely a survey not a research so therefore it's not a fact and can't be used as a yardstick to draw a conclusion and coming from the executive chairman of NCC is disgusting to say the least!! Here read more about the FBI article https://www.quora.com/Is-Nigeria-the-biggest-cybercrime-country-What-is-a-possible-ranking Even Business Insider didn't list Nigeria in its top ten cyber crime hotspots last year. http://www.pulse.ng/bi/tech/tech-the-worlds-10-biggest-cybercrime-hotspots-in-2016-ranked-id6683526.html In 2015 a foremost trusted company in cybersecurity Symantec release an article on the TOP 20 cyberhotspot in the world, guess what Nigeria is not even in the list http://www.enigmasoftware.com/top-20-countries-the-most-cybercrime/ https://techcrunch.com/2015/01/04/after-sony-whats-the-real-cybercrime-geography/ So I wonder why the chairman decided to the world and tarnishing the image of our beloved nation Nigeria. Is it that he was misinformed too? Is that he lacks the capacity to verify his information? Well him really knows what happened. To show that it wasn't deliberate I hereby call on him to issue a press release to all newspapers especially online news outlets to retract this statement as it's a slap and an embrrassment, and it has huge negative economic and financial implications on the country!! I felt the need to this because our country's online reputation is so bad that the mention of Nigeria can cost you a job that you are so qualified for or a business deal, Nigerian freelancers can relate to this very well!! Why is the people in government making life difficult for Nigerians?? Hardworking Nigerians should stand up to this and say no !!! THE CHAIRMAN OF NCC MUST RETRACT THIS MISINFORMATION THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS NIGERIA Cc Seun lalasticlala mynd44 |

The chairman should even be defending and discrediting some stories about NIGERIA, not spreading and not adding credibility to such fallacies !!! Am totally pissed at the moment!!! We all know the pain of stigmatisation that is associated with identifying that you are a Nigerian why is he causing US more pain!!! |

@OP thanks for your research efforts. I hope the NCC Executive Vice Chairman will issue a disclaimer after this. |
