PRESS RELEASE

25th of August, 2017

PDP OWERRI MUNICIPAL CHAPTER CONDEMNS PLANNED DEMOLITION OF ANCESTRAL EKEUKWU OWERRI MARKET BY IMO STATE GOVERNMENT.

The Owerri Municipal Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the planned demolition of the ancestral Ekeukwu Owerri market as unpopular, insensitive, inhuman and indeed lacking economic sense and warned the Governor Rochas Okorocha led APC government of the looming economic hardship should they go ahead with their planned demolition.

The party's position was made available to newsmen in Owerri through a terse press statement signed by the LGA Chairman, Engr. Okechukwu Oparah.

Engr. Oparah is of the view that the relocation policy of the government is not only a misplaced priority but also conceived in bad fate targeted at the people of Owerri.

"We condemn in totality, the planned action of the Imo State government to demolish the ancestral market of Owerri ancient clan with a 48hrs evacuation order. This is another ploy by the Okorocha government to perpetually impoverish our people,We urge Governor Okorocha to hid the counsel of elders, the clergy and traditional rulers who have warned against this unpopular anti people policy. We wonder why the government is in a haste to demolish the market even when there an Order of Court restraining it from coming close to the market with a view to demolishing it.

Continuing he said, "We had expected Governor Okorocha to at least respect the judicial pronouncement, exercise patience and allow the court to dispense with the matter.

"Having seen the lawless resolve of the government to carry out this inhuman policy, we call on the Leader of Imo State House of Assembly, Hon Lugard Osuji to save his people from his party's wickedness."

Engr. Oparah recalled that, "this same government refused to evacuate the mountainous refuse it dumped at the market. It took the kind intervention of Imo State PDP National Assembly members Hon Onyewuchi Ezenwa and Senator Samuel Anyanwu Samdaddy to evacuate it amidst intimidation from Gov.Okorocha."

He urged the PDP supporters and indigenes of Owerri to ensure they take advantage of the continuous voters registration and collect their permanent voters card ready ahead of the 2019 general elections to sack APC and usher in a PDP government that will liberate and indeed rebuild the state.

Honestly I don't understand what is Okorocha's problem, is demolishing IMO state's problem?? Besides there's a court order restraining that action and the governor want's to flout those court orders?? Does the governor really care about the economic and social implications of that action especially now that the country is in recession? Sometimes I wonder if th political class and elites enjoy suffering the masses as there's no better description of that, there are a lot of demolitions in and around IMO state and am so sure time will not permit him to finish the reconstruction works of those ones, why not focus on them and see the extent he will deliver before his tenure runs out rather than embarking on further demolitions that will bring about untold hardship to the good and great people of IMO.
