I think yhu will be an employee who works under contract for a specific time. More like yhu re hired. A contract staff like yhu, does not become a regular addition to the staff and is not considered a permanent employee. There will be agreed payment from the both parties tho.(Yhu and the employee).

The people who instituted Contract positions did so because some positions in an organizations do not have a continuous responsibility. For this reason, the contract staff given a contract stating the period the work he will embark will last. If the job extends for any reason, the contract is extended. By this, this company does not keep a worker redundant and paying him. Also, because the contract worker does not meet the requirements set by the company that entitles her staff for gratuity and pension, the contract worker does not get these benefits. However,, he is compensated for his good works through Ex-Gratia or a pay-off.
This saves the company money indirectly. Notwithstanding, when a contract worker embarks on his contract and performs exceptionally, and he fits into other roles, the company sees him more than a worker who fills in for a temporary role because his input, experience and devotion to work can not be sourced easily. For these reasons, he is converted to a staff and he is entitle to all staff benefits.

Negatively, most Nigerian companies have seen the bright part of this contract system of employment which is one-sided benefit, to the company and they have utilized it to a abusive level. whereby they place even key roles in an organization as contract positions. The disadvantage of the abusive system yields negative results. First the contract worker who feels his position ought to be a staff position either pay eye service or work so hard or becomes irresponsible. any of these has a pay off at the end. The man that works hard has high potential of being converted or moving to another company as a staff, the man that pays eye service stays a long time in the company, he does not work so hard, yet he hopes that he will be recognized and rewarded. The man the is irresponsible is the most risky link in the chain. He can do anything and get out of it easily.
However, some Nigeria companies still treat their contract staff well and respect them. but the contract worker should know and understand the grounds he is standing on and respect himself and work hard and move on because, his current status is not the end of his career path.

In other parts of the world, things are done much better differently. Contract system initiatives gives workers and company flexibility of engagement. On the side of the worker, he takes the time he needs to work, which is helpful for a continuing education or relocation or family-work life balance. On the part of the company, the system helps in managing short term works and economic planning. Whichever way, both sides benefits.

Conclusion, if you have access to contract position after school, take the opportunity and build your experience and fire up.

It is synonymous to casual worker. It basically means that you won't enjoy some benefits as the real staff.

It's cheap labour stuff, you work hard with little income in return, contract staff could be ordered to do any additional available work aside his schedule.. it waste time, and once you are getting older you will be disengaged and younger 'labourers' be employed to carry on.

Simply put, a contract staff is like a househelp of the house otherwise, the company in this case.

A contract employee is employed based on a contract (a legal agreement). The contract will state what task the employee will perform, how much the company will pay and how long the employee is needed. When the duration of the contract elapses, the company may or may not renew the contract depending on if they still have tasks for the employee to complete. If the contract is renewed, the employee continues to work for another duration specified in the renewed contract. If the contract is not renewed, the employee would have to leave the company and seek employment elsewhere.

Did you tell them you will leave for service? They probably offered you a contract position because of your availability. No company would employ you on full time basis knowing fully well that you would leave within a year. It takes time to place ad, conduct interview, orientate and get a new employee to speed.

I did not go into advantages and disadvantages because the contract job is just appropriate for your situation. Take it and hang on to it till you leave for service and that would be a good experience on you cv when you finish service.

I think the problem here is that Nigerians like to use negative experiences and transform them into sweeping generalisations.

Contract staff work under a particular contract, you work X amount of months for X amount of pay and X benefits.

Being a contract staff isn't necessarily a bad thing and there are various reasons why companies hire contract staff. For example, some want to have insurance against hiring someone off the bat in case they don't perform well. In this case the contract is used as a sort of probationary period. In other cases the role is a temporary one, maybe there's a project you want to execute and you don't have the experience in house. You can contract the outstanding roles to another person or company to undertake the project for you.

Many contract workers actually get paid higher than their peers because what they are being hired for is a specialised role that is hard to fill. These workers also receive benefits that other workers may not and are not bound by office politics because they're not really part of the company.

However, some contract workers are actually company slaves who work hard and get paid badly. If this is your case, you need to do all you can to become indispensable to the company. Learn as much as you can and find a better, more permanent job when you can.

All in all, as a contract worker you have to be smart, and you have to know your rights, otherwise they'll milk you dry.

•••To me really there is no such thing as a permanent contract staff, it just like open end contract from the day yhu took it, as it's all about end rights. It wouldn't have been hard for them to make yhu a permanent staff from day one but they choose the less risk alternative. Tho yhu might be getting redundancy payment if the contract is less than two years.
