Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Ministry of Aviation to take over from Ghana, the management of the Nigerian airspace in the Gulf of Guinea.

The president also expressed concern about the absence of a national carrier and directed the ministry to look into the possibility of having one as soon as possible.

He gave the directive at the State House in Abuja yesterday while receiving a briefing from top officials of the ministry led by Permanent Secretary Hajiya Binta Bello.

The permanent secretary later told State House journalists that Buhari ordered her ministry to begin the process of securing the management of the Nigerian airspace which, she noted, Ghana had been managing since 1945.

The permanent secretary hinted that Togo and Benin Republic had equally concluded arrangements to take over their airspaces from Ghana.

“We’ve a directive by the president to start the process of securing the management of the Nigerian airspace over the Gulf of Guinea which Ghana has been maintaining since 1945, and there is a move on the ground by Togo and Republic of Benin to take over their own airspace from Ghana,” she said.

Bello said the president also ordered the ministry to expedite action on the establishment of a new national airline for the country.

According to the permanent secretary, the president is worried that Nigeria does not have a national air carrier.

She said Buhari was told that domestic airlines were hugely indebted to regulatory agencies under despite the federal government’s N300 billion intervention fund designed to boost their operations.

The permanent secretary expressed hope that the four state-of-the-art airport terminals being constructed with Chinese Bank loan would be ready by first quarter of next year.

Presidential spokesperson Femi Adesina later in a statement quoted Buhari as expressing concern about the enormous debt profile of the nation’s aviation sector.

The president was also quoted as assuring that his government would act quickly to redress the situation.

Brother, that hydro electric contract is a scam, it's way over-priced, how much would it cost to develop a modular modern day gas-powered turbine station that delivers five times more output... Did you remember Buhari spent over 80 billion in search of crude oil in the Lake chad basin? What has come of it, he gave farmers in Kebbi when he entered office, the first few months over 10 Billion, INEC, power generation has not reached the levels they met it, well crude oil is 2.2Mpd, this one is fair, every other thing is like a curse, everything this administration touches dies...May God deliver us

APC has a dossieur of serial failure... if we begin to itemize it, we won't leave here...the customs tariff adjustment is another calamity that hiked price of production, closed factories, made food prices soar, all in the name of, we want higher foreign reserves to the detriment of the masses, FDI dwindling daily, mass factories meltdown, foreign companies are withdrawing their funds and new investors have refused to come in...Nigeria is experiencing the lowest FDIs in its history, the facts are there, yet some fanatics see nothing wrong, chai.....It's till people start to eat rats before they see a problem

This has been my main grouse with this govt , they are always very short sighted in their approach to everything, where are the car factories their high tariff were suppose to stimulate today? Non has come up instead the ones that were even rush to start during the previous govt have abandoned their factories halfway because the cost have trippled due to poor decision of the govt and lending rates hiked ..it's really sad but how shallow people applaud this govt shocks me

Lol @ lending rates, that's if the big players would allow the small/medium scale entrepreneurs have access to them. This administration is an error, unfortunately, many of the problems created will require lots of time to fix..i feel bad for those who stake their credibility for this govt, from economist to pastors, to social commentators, each time i listen to radio, and i recall some die hard fans that were in support of this administration speak today, i can't help but shake my head at the sound of the disappointment that belies their hypocritical praise for the president...

Lol @ he should come and complete the good work he started, and now i ask, what and what are the good works, cause besides FEC meetings and monthly allocation which are statutory for the country to keep running, i can see nothing....
