The unnecessary state of fear and insecurity which Kanu and his horde of sponsors and supporters has put the nation in,is beginning to assume sinister proportions that many of us may be unwittingly unaware. It should be obvious to us that, God forbid,that if the current inter-ethnic tensions and mutual suspicions escalate into bloody clashes and mayhem,it would be a short step towards the scrapping of the present 'democratic' civilian experiment. As it is, there are still many putschist elements within our armed forces. Even within the political establishment, particularly those retired military personnel turned into agbada-wearing politicians, there are quite a number with dictatorial and autocratic dispositions. A situation of ethnic and tribal conflict will only present such elements with a perfect excuse to once more truncate our limited democratic institutional advance. The earlier the Kanu challenge is brought to a swift and conclusive resolution, the better it would be for the nation.
