Nigeria vs Biafra: The battle of the flags and its sillyness

The latest statement by the Commissioner of Police in Abia State Mr Anthony Ogbizi that anyone caught with the Biafra flag or emblemĀ  will be arrested and charged to court reflects more than anything the short sightedness with which the Nigerian authorities are confronting the Biafra question.

The truth is that it is possible for a lot of Igbos to be both Biafrans and Nigerians at the same time. Go to countries like United Kingdom, a lot of people are both British and English, some are British and Scottish, and some others are both Welsh or Irish and yet British. Go to advanced countries like United States, the flag of confederacy still fly over State Government buildings. In Spain people identify as both Spanish and Catalonians or Basque separatist. In fact the Catalonians even have football teams where the likes of Carles Puyol have been seen playing for both Catalonians and Spanish at various times.

The truth is most countries recognise the balancing act involved in recognising the right of its citizens to self determination as guaranteed by United Nations charter while also upholding the right of the Nation to maintain its territorial integrity and sovereignty. This balancing act requires negotiation and nurturing peace. In great and stable countries like United States of America, politicians advocate the need to perfect their union. They recognise that their union is not perfect and needs to be perfected. They recognise that you can not impose peace on any populace, you work through it. They never use terms like the Unity of our country is non-negotiable. In fact Britain for all of its history recently conducted a referendum for the people of Scotland and guess what? The Scottish chose to remain British!.

Yes Biafra resonates with a lot of Igbos but it is nonetheless not clear if majority of Igbos will rather choose to secede from Nigeria if it ever comes to a referendum. But before even a referendum, Nigeria should explore restructuring in real terms and give the 20year olds flying the flag of Biafra the opportunity to be both proud Biafrans and proud Nigerians. These two identities do not have to be mutually exclusive, the options available to us do not have to be binary. The lovers of true peace should work for an arrangement where people can be both Biafrans and Nigerians; Oduduwa and Nigerians, Arewa and Nigerians.

Flying the flag of Biafra should not be criminalised for the sake of it. This moment calls for strategic engagement of all Nigerians and not short sighted belligerence!
