I would only tell you not to get too complacent though. I was of the same mindframe until the last two years when we had so many technological changes in our company. Some financial analysis and reporting that used to take me almost a week is now done in a couple of hours. It's only a matter of time before numbers are reduced in the industry. The new breed of tech companies are not accountant heavy (Amazon, Google, Facebook etc) because there are no paper trails, all data is captured digitally and categorised at source. In the past where you needed one accountant for every say $10m of revenue generated in the economy, these companies can have one accountant for $100m. As the economy consolidates from loads of small companies who all need accountants into behemoths like Amazon, accounting numbers will reduce.

So Oga ibime which profession will you advise someone to jump into in order not to be forced back to village?

Op, clearly you do not understand what journalism is. Please do not narrow journalism down to newspaper production only. How news are disseminated May change, journalism will remain.

Accountants are there to stay. Their roles has always been to ensure the figures churned out by the softwares are accurate. And also to ensure the integrity of the entire financial reports prepared by a business is true

It is an undisputed fact that automation will automatically reduce human requirement in the production or process cycle of a work place. The reality is that graduates of some professions and disciplines which are assumed to be in high demand are still unemployed, even in advanced countries. For the past fifteen (15) years, I have been hearing that automation / technology / computer software will put accountants out of jobs. Till date, both public and private sectors of the economy are still employing accountants. Accounting profession is regulated by principles, conventions, standards, legislations, best practices in other countries. It is always evolving and requires constant knowledge update in order to be in tune with current developments and practices. Like some of the contributors have mentioned, accounting has phases, aspects and specialisations. Softwares will assist or take-over the recording and summary phases, but interpretation, classification and communication in monetary and economic terms to users will be done by accountants. For instance, a company that deals in sales of vehicles will be committing an error of principle if the cost of purchase of vehicles for company's use are expensed, instead of capitalised. Most of the fields in accounting like management accounting, cost accounting, financial management requires application of logic within an established standards, company policy, government regulations to arrive at decisions which are sometimes subjective or based on past experience of the accountants. Taxation, audit and assurance services, financial advisory services, accountancy services, bankruptcy / executorship / insolvency and business re-organisation/ re-construction services can only be carried out by accountants. More often than not, some people summarised the work of an accountant to only book-keeping and financial accounting. Accounting is the language of business and finance, without interpreting the meaning and its usefulness to different stakeholders (government, shareholders, employees, management, investors and potential investors, even job seekers) it becomes useless and meaningless.

I disagree on Social Media Manager fazing.Inshort, with the advernt of technology and mediasphere, social media has come to stay.
How Do I Know?
Every business is going social.
Not everyone has the TIME and EXPERTISE to manage their presence online. It has to be sourced out to someone who can do it better, and with time to navigate through their media accounts.

For journalism that one is pure lies and falsehood. Journalism is not going anywhere in the next century.

The best information portals and news websites don't even belong to journalist, most Nigerian journalist do it in their father's house only.

The point is journalism and Teaching are bound to be more competitive if not extinct, you need to compete with well experienced and prolific reporters, but one skill will pay off for you if you're a journalist - creative writing skills (copy writing).

As for teachers, learning is leaving Brick and mortar, Be NECO, JAMB, WAEC are all integrating IT, job insecurity has made online learning be the only alternative, no one want to leave his job to go back to university to pursue MSC or PhD, they will rather keep it and bag it from places like Cambridge university, or several other universities online that are globally recognised and accredited.

Open you eyes, see the future, and prepare ahead. Internet is next oxygen, and tech is the new life.

You are the one confusing yourself. Journalism does not start and end with newspapers. There are so many branches of journalism. So many.
Print media may not have the monopoly anymore but like someone said earlier, it's going nowhere anytime soon.

tech do not make tech, humans do, it can never be more advanced than the brain of a human.
we develop the protocol, it implement.
also social media user is different from social media manager, GM in any org might be the one at the enterance or the one in the inner room.

If you think Accountants or financial managers are going anywhere because of softwares then you need to have a rethink. Using the softwares itself requires the professional judgement of the accountant so that not just any person can handle the role. Not to mention application of relevant IFRS, tax laws.. etc

Accounting is one area that just has to remain

Ever heard of AI? Once again, nothing here that a software cannot do better. Straight to the point - the only need for Accountants at this point is during the development of software to replace them during the domain acquisition process. I know many Accountants will beg to disagree, but the truth as they say, is bitter. cheesy
Pls tell me one AI that is fully independent of human input as at now.. the day AI becomes fully independent is the day all humans in all field becomes useless.. Even in health sector..

It is obvious that the writer didn't know the duties of an accountant. Anybody can be a cashier. accounting profession covers:

1. Statutory Audit ( Only done by licensed auditors not computers)
2. Liquidators & Executorship
3.Tax Accounting
4.Inventory Accountant
5. Company's secretary (The law allows Chartered Accountants, Chartered Secretary and Lawyers only, to carry out this duties)
And lots more.

Accounting Profession is regulated by law. Banking is a single industry, Accountant are needed in all Industries either statutorily or non statutorily.

The job of a social media has nothing to do with one's country. As long as you have an internet connection and understand how the online sphere and market works, you are good to go.
