FisifunKododada: Nigerian society is too tainted with religious extremism for even the highly educated to function properly. If you are highly educated and you still believe Jesus walked on water/rose from the dead or Muhammed was a peaceful human being - then your education has failed you. The purpose of education is to promote awareness/consciousness. That's why if you meet the top scientists/intellectuals in the world, they tend to exude a zen like (or yogi like) quality. One possible reason for this is that they have reached a point were they are fully convinced that their ignorance far outweighs their knowledge. Only arrogant people say things like: "There is God." or "There is no God." The truth of the matter is nobody knows. And I mean NOBODY. Look at all the problems we have created in Nigeria because of people who are "absolutely sure" of the existence of a sky Daddy - Boko Haram, killing of twins; prosperity gospel aka spiritual corruption; killing of 'witches'; etc. Yet, the most significant consequence of our extreme religious belief is that Nigeria is a country of 180 million people, the vast majority of whom are AWAITING the end of the world. If you believe the world is coming to an end, why would you be FULLY committed to make your society a better place? Most Nigerians believe that this world does not matter because they are gonna START A NEW LIFE WITH THEIR SKY DADDY after the world ENDS. This is one of the most fundamental reason behind Nigeria's underdevelopment. So, until a sizable number of Nigerians are committed to creating HEAVEN on this Nigerian EARTH, rather than awaiting some sky Daddy to descend from the sky and save us, corruption and underdevelopment continues to no end. Nice write up. but it wasn't the whole nigeria that were killing twins, it was Efiks that did that. |

Wrong! Yorubas and Igbos should give credit to the British for bringing Western education to their colony and setting up schools and importing teachers to teach the ancestors. No group in Nigeria can take credit for the positive dividends of colonialism in colonial Nigeria. My information is sourced from NUC. Stupid source, stupid NUC. Ignorant! The missionaries came into West Africa before the colonial masters. When they came into Nigeria (Long before it became Nigeria), their first place of contact was Yoruba land. Western education became extensive in Yoruba land that other tribes in Nigeria and other west africa neighbours came in to benefit. Better get your history right. 11 Likes |

goaldynman: Op can lie!
Dr. Chibugo Okoli becomes first African woman Medical Director and Director of Public Health in the UK, she became the first African medical professional to be appointed to the most powerful dual position as Medical Director and Director of Public Health in the United Kingdom. UGO, as she is known to her friends and peers, became a Consultant in Public Health in the UK only a few years ago, after passing all the medical exams required of all specialist doctors. Within a record time she was sky-rocketed to this extremely powerful new position with a six figure salary in May this year, after beating several competitors and rivals to the coveted post and therefore proving herself worthy of the position to her peers who are mainly European, Her father is Professor Cyril Agodi Onwumechili, the first Nigerian nuclear physicist and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ife, Ile-Ife renamed Obafemi Awolowo University
What lie, we are talking about first professor not first director. You sound pained to me. 7 Likes |

Throwback: Can some people ever catch up to greatness?
Omoluabi no be anybody school mate.
Above is the very first professor of anything in Nigeria. A medical doctor by profession.
He was the most senior African on the academic board of University of Ibadan. When it was time for the British to hand over UI to Nigerians, the Igbo dominated NCNC ensured an Igbo Professor Kenneth Dike who was away on sabbatical in the USA was called back to become the vice-principal ahead of his senior Prof Ajose who was more qualified, physically present and interested in the position.
When it was time to also name the Principal, Kenneth Dike was equally chosen ahead of Prof Ajose
It is noteworthy that Dr Akanu Ibiam who was also Igbo, was the Chairman of the University Council.
Prof Kenneth Dike would go ahead to recruit Nigerians into UI, but out of the 108 newly hired, only 3 were Yorubas, and the remaining 108 were from Dike's and Akanu Ibiam's Eastern region.
Prof Ajose resigned and moved to the new Western region established OAU to become its pioneer VC, since the federal government posts was only merited by the Igbos who had partnered with the educationally disadvantaged North. Yet this same Igbos till today continue to bemoan the Northernization policy of Ahmadu Bello, who was Northern Premier. As far as they were concerned, they secured their own Eastern region for Easterners only, they dominated the Federal positions, and the North should have also been made open to their greed.
So when you hear some people wailing about marginalization, they are only longing for a return to an era when merit is to appoint Igbo.
Leave unverifiable things that happened in 1822. Presently IMO state has the highest number of professors in nigeria. It has always been the igbos from day one. Envy won't change that. |

I used to know Prof Babs Fafunwa before he passed on. Prof Dibu Ojerinde, last I checked, was an HOD at the Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University.
Quite surprising that Prof. Adeyanju, the first Educational design and technology professor is not on the list. 1 Like |

What is all these for?...it only makes one who can think to cover his face with shame!
With battalion of the old school and new school of professors we have in Nigeria which am sure can triple
what the have in Hong kong and Taiwan, Nigeria is still backward to be importing even took pick
and rice from these countries!...honestly, if we don't want to continue to deceive ourselves,
we need to re-address the issue of our education in this country..
Afterall, all that makes a great, stable, buoyant and peaceful country is not all about everybody being a prof! |

TimeMod1: Stupid source, stupid NUC. Why are you mixing up Nuc with colonial history? The colonialist first set up western education in the West before moving to the East. They are the ones we owe. |
