The issue is, was the surgery necessary considering the size of the cyst. A single ultrasound scan is not enough to assess a cyst especially when it was done elsewhere. Removing a cyst is not a treatment for subfertility.
The couple were anxious and needed extensive counselling.

I think surgery was necessary considering the fact that the cyst is a complex one, having a solid component, such cysts have risk of malignancy, the impression of a mucinous cyst by the sonographer is not a definitive diagnosis which can only be made by a pathologist. Remember, the description of the cyst was not comprehensive, nothing was said about the borders and the blood flow.

I read the full story, it's really Sad, medical terminology can be boring sometimes, don't worry, I understand.

Been together since 2012, no child, consulted a Dr for assistance, precisely a CONSULTANT, who suggested an operation after an ultrasound scan showed she has Ovarian cyst.
The Dr is believed to have removed the woman's 2 ovaries and Fallopian tubes------this implies she can only have Children via IVF or adopt one since she only has a womb left without Fallopian tubes or ovaries. Was said to have also made several cuts on her small intestine, Now she can't pass stool and is currently at Maitama General Hospital were she has had 2 surgeries done already to help save her life
This should be short enough for you, manage it.
Thanx so much my (sis/bro...), your write up really helps. Problem with some writers... they don't think of their targets.

i dont think the cyst was removed because of infertility. It was probably symptomatic otherwise there is no rationale behind removing a cyst as a treatment for infertility. Secondly the cost of the surgery was 45k. Hello. In abuja you are removing cyst with 45k and you dont expect complication? That is just about 100 euro. Either the doctor is not a doctor....no doctor in practise for 30yrs will remove cyst for 45k. And a post op patient is not moving bowel the next thing you gave liquid paraffin. That cant be an experienced doctor with 30yrs in practise. Even if you mistakenly rent the gut it is not going to be in multiple places and the two ovaries and tubes wont be missing. I can bet it.....he is not a doctor!!! And patient too that went to remove a cyst with 45k ....they were looking for the cheapest and the man took advantage of them. I wont stop saying this. HEALTHCARE IS EXPENSIVE. NIGERIANS MUST LEARN HOW TO PAY FOR IT. DONT BE PENNYWISE POUND FOOLISH

You made a big point here. Those in the field know that quacks abound and every genuine doctor knows when to refer a case. Removal of ovarian cyst in any good private hospital in Portharcourt is nothing less than 130k. Abuja should be higher. So how come such surgery was charged 45k in Abuja. It goes a long way to tell you the facility the man visited. Cheap things dey turn belle sometimes. Joke apart,I don't think the CMD is a qualified doctor. There are many people pretending to be doctors in Nigeria.

Really pathetic.
I want to believe this is a work of quacks. Those people get mind pass. Killing innocent citizens who patronize them, although some people also know they are quacks yet still go to them thinking they would save money but end up with worse situations.
Many cases around here of people going to school drop outs who are self-acclaimed health professionals.

Many doctors in Nigeria are rubbish, they are every where with knife ready to operate on you, even if its just ordinary headache, so that you will pay big bills. God punish devil

While i respect your view, it is very uninformed and obviously unintelligent. Nigeria boosts of some of the finest doctors in the world. Some of the doctors you run to in the US, UK and elsewhere are Nigerians.

The failure of govt to provide basic healthcare for the poor and regulatory failure in establishment and practise of private healthcare outfits has seen a rise in quackery to fill up the space. The system like every other in Nigeria is rotten and unguarded so its every businessman's turf.

Most Nigerians don't listen. Healthcare is NOT CHEAP, if you can't afford it please go to a good govt hosp (at least in Abuja) and be patient. Lets stop this ponzi scheme mentality, no body would collect 45k from you for a major surgery like ovarian cystectomy and you expect a good outcome.

After sacrificing his wife to the butcher, where did he raise money for the extensive corrective surgery at the public hospital, where he could have gone ab initio.

Nyanya general hosp is just about #300 away from his location.

The "doctor" is evil, the husband is wicked.

They don't listen. When shit hits the roof they claim ignorance.

No govt hosp in Abuja would collect 45k for that type of surgery, talk more of private. They don't have time for govt hosp cos they want it sharp sharp. Not everything is 'MMM'

I pity the poor wife who would have to deal with this

Pls readers should disregard this recommendation of Gynapharm as treatment for ovarian cyst. It is a herbal fraud.

Sit down there. It has worked for every one i recommended it for. I have my facts and stop saying what you don't know.

I did. Just to learn to avoid such predicament. The funniest thing about this story was that the wife didn't need any surgery.

He didn't generalise.
Secondly, many people are ignorant, not just about money and wanting things cheaply. Many people are actually of the opinion that any private hospital is better than any public hospital including teaching hospital until they are referred to the same public hospital.
My blood brother was guilty of this, paid 80k in a private hospital for surgical operation would cost a fraction of 80k in state hospital just because he believed that private hospital is better than public ones. In addition, the operation was done wrongly since the "doctor" was a quack.
As for me, public hospital any day any time unless they're on strike.

I meant that the first surgery that caused the irreparable damage at the private hospital was needless. She's still undergoing corrective surgeries at the public hospital.
Mind you, she has lost both ovaries and fallopian tubes to the needless first operation.

The story is pathetic, however there are some issues. We were not informed of the specialty of the doctor & the age of the woman.
If the lady had subfertility with ovarian cyst, all the investigations including an HSG should have been done before the surgery.
What was the cause of the subfertility? Probably pelvic inflammatory disease which resulted in the frozen pelvic making it difficult to see the uterus and fallopian tubes. Meaning they were not removed but were buried in the pelvic adhesions. The adhesions must have involved the bowels resulting in intestinal perforation while trying to free them. These are things that can happen during an abdominal surgery. The problem started when the surgeon did only a primary repair of the injured intestine without performing an ileostomy (opening a passage for faeces) to aid in healing of the bowel. During follow up, with the patient now having a distended abdomen he should have know that faeces were collecting in the abdominal cavity. He should have reopened the abdomen or refer the patient to a facility with a general surgeon.
The good thing is that the lady is still alive but her chances of conception is slim.

Please sir, look at the bolded portion of your post and see if you any wish to review

MODIFIED: you dont always have to do ileostomy during a resection. Even the referral centre did the 2nd surgery without ileostomy and only went back for it after a breakdown of the anastomosis

While I agree with you on the ileostomy, I disagree on the cost of the surgery.
How much do you think NHIS pay for ceasarian section? It may not be fair to compare the value of 100 Euros with N45,000. To a middle class Nigerian, 45k is about a good monthly pay which I guess is probably much less than a weekly pay for an odd job in Europe. The environments are different and the purchasing power of both currencies are different as well.

I agreewith you 45k may appear small for Abuja.... I am also wondering what part of Abuja are we talking about? The real or the rural part of Abuja?
In addition, why would you choose to compare with PH rather than Osogbo, Birnin Gwari or Oye Ekiti...
It may also be interesting to know that facilties thst charge 140k for such procedures may once in a while carry out "almost free* procedures based on circumstances.
On the qualifications of the " Dr", it may be difficult for me to comment sha. The chances may be high that he may not be a real, but we can never tell.

The health seeking behaviour of our society is very funny. It is pathetic thst you see well educated people act in funny ways. While it is not good to speak bad of the dead but I would love to draw on the story of the late senator from Osun State, he was a former governor, he got all the resources he needed for any kind of care but he chose a CMD who was a nurse posing as a doctor. The man even had a prosperous practice there and everybody referred to him as a Dr.
Reading through a lot of posts here, I have a feeling many people have been dealing with quacks rather than doctors. Unfortunately for doctors, everybody who works in what looks like a hospital is a Dr.
God will help us
