There was wide scale logistical improvement in the Businesses in the Eastern part of Nigeria as the largest flat bottom vessel Desert Ranger berthed in the port City of Calabar , News correspondents have it that this Information will boost the untapped Maritime business that has been lying fallow due to the inability of the federal Government to build more deep sea ports in the East or dredge the existing Onne and Calabar Ports.

With this logistical improvement and berthing of large flat bottomed vessel, Moribund port projects in the South Eastern states of Anambra and Abia are expected to kick off full blast to tap into the fallow Maritime economy that would boost exports of manufactured goods and earn foreign exchange and revenue for the eastern states.

Pundits have it that there is discussion presently at very high level in the Eastern states in view of getting skeletal maritime activities to encourage and boost the export economy of the states.

Reports gathered from Vanguard Online has it that Mrs Olufumilayo Olotu, the Calabar Port Manager, has expressed joy over the berthing of the biggest flat bottom vessel, Desert Ranger, at the port. She said in a statement in Lagos that the vessel, which sailed in directly from Greece, arrived with 62,000 metric tonnes of wheat.

She expressed the appreciation of the port management to its partners, Atlantic Bulk Carriers from Greece, for taking the initiative. “The berthing of the vessel is a dream come true; it is a sign of good things to come and a sigh of relief for the management of the port. “Very soon, another carrier vessel will be coming in and we are expecting that Calabar Port will be very active again,’’ she said. She solicited the support of all stakeholders to ensure that the business environment at the port was conducive to investors. Mr Asi Esin, the Director-General of Cross River Waterways Authority, was quoted as expressing delight over the development. Esin assured that the state government would work with the port for maximum benefit to the people. He said that the issue of tax rebate to willing investors in the port would be looked into to attract more investors to the state. “Gov. Ben Ayade is desirous of having investors in our state, so I assure you that the governor will do everything possible to ensure that investors do not run away due to multiple taxation,’’ he said. Esin said that for a long time the state had been hoping and waiting for such an opportunity capable of turning the fortunes of the state for good. He also assured that the state government would give the port management the desired support to succeed.
