Spain’s deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría says the country will push forward in suspending Catalonia’s autonomy unless the region leader drops his push for independence.

Santamaría dave the warning day before the deadline issued to Mr Puigdemont was due to expire on Thursday 19, 2017, as Catalonia Government insisted on meeting Madrid’s demand in the wake of a disputed vote on secession.

The two key members of Catalan Independence Movement Jordi Sánchez and Jordi Cuixart, are being held without bail while they are under investigation for sedition, by a Spanish judge.

The two key members who lead prominent separatist groups in the 1 October independence vote, which the Madrid government branded illegal.

Mr Sánchez, who heads the Catalan National Assembly (ANC), a pro-independence organisation, and Mr Cuixart, leader of Omnium Cultural, appeared before the High Court in Madrid on Monday.

After the Illegal conducted referendum held in the Catalonia region, Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont signed a declaration of independence but halted its implementation and called for negotiations.

Prime Minister Rajoy has given Mr Puigdemont until Thursday to come up with a definitive answer on the independence question or face the implementation of direct rule under Article 155.
